Neighbors hope to bring justice to Thursday’s homicides

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Neighbors of the scene of Thursday night’s double homicide in Lansing said they’re surprised something like this would happen in their once quiet neighborhood.

As of Friday, the Lansing Police Department is continuing to look for a person accused of shooting and killing two people in the 500 block of Woodrow Avenue.

One person who lives nearby and shares a backyard with one of the victims said that the community wants answers.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” Sheri Powers said. “I wanted to know who did it. Who harmed her,” she asked.

Investigators could be seen Friday afternoon going from door to door trying to piece things together.

“It just never happens in this neighborhood as long as I’ve lived here, I’ve never seen anything like this happen in this area,” Powers added.

LPD said they believe the incident to be a domestic situation that ended in the death of a 50-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman.

Powers, the 53-year-old’s neighbor, said the accused suspect took away someone she called her friend way too soon. As of Friday, LPD has not released the names of the victims.

“I mean I was just, it’s sad because she’s young and she’s a nice person. I feel bad for her family, her daughter, it’s just a horrible horrible thing,” she said. “If I seen her I always talked to her and the same thing she did with me. But it just comes down to it’s a life that was taken and it didn’t probably need to be taken.”

So far, no one has been arrested in connection to the incident, but the accused is known to police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Matthew Salmon at (517) 483-6855, LPD at (517) 483-4600 extension 5, Crime Stoppers at (517) 483-7867, or send a private message through LPD’s Facebook page.
