The Neighbours revival continues to surprise fans — this time by casting Hollywood star Mischa Barton in a guest role.

Former The OC and The Hills star Mischa is heading Down Under to play American Reece, whose arrival in Erinsborough is far from what it appears to be.

The news comes on the same day as Neighbours has officially resumed production, and adds another high-profile international star to the show's legacy.

Margot Robbie, Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe are only a few of the worldwide stars who started their careers on Ramsay Street as young actors.

"I’m excited to be part of this iconic show’s next chapter, and I am really looking forward to being back in Australia, a place I know and love! I think the character of Reece is going to be a great role for me to explore and play with," Barton said.

Producer Jason Herbison added: "With Neighbours launching on Amazon Freevee in North America, we are beyond excited to have an actor of Mischa’s calibre join us for the beginning of this exciting new chapter. Mischa’s character is dynamic and unpredictable and will have an instant presence on Ramsay Street. Our loyal viewers are going to love her, locally and abroad.”

Barton is best-known for playing Marissa Cooper in cult classic US primetime soap The OC, after breaking through as a child actress in The Sixth Sense. She most recently appeared as herself in The Hills.

Neighbours returns in the second half of 2023 with new episodes streaming free on Amazon Freevee in the UK and US. Network 10 will retain first-run rights in Australia for the new series.
