Neighbours star Matt Wilson has spoken for the first time about David Tanaka's tragic exit from the soap – revealing how he felt about saying goodbye to Takaya Honda, who played his on-screen husband.

Long-standing character David sadly lost his life in scenes that aired on February 1. He sustained severe injuries after falling from a cliff alongside Eden Shaw, who had started a violent fight with David's twin brother Leo Tanaka.

After David insisted that Eden be taken away for treatment first, his husband Aaron Brennan and Leo were devastated to return to David's side and find that he had passed away.

With Aaron now facing a future without his husband, Wilson has revealed that the loss of David is also a big deal for him as an actor.

"Aaron and David have been together longer than I, Matt, have been with my wife, so that says a lot," he said, speaking during an interview on Neighbours' official Instagram account.

"Our characters have been through lots of ups and downs and we've always worked through it, and I think the only way for our characters to go apart is if one of us has to kick the bucket. It's incredibly dramatic.

"It's incredibly emotional, not only for the characters, but for us as the actors, because Takaya and I have had such a good mate-ship ever since we've been here. We really understand each other."

Honda joined Neighbours as David in 2016. He added that David's fateful decision to step in and help Leo, which ultimately cost him his life, was fuelled by his continual desire to do the right thing.

"Would David leave Aaron and leave Isla and Nicolette and the whole family and the street for Eden to survive?" he said. "And it's kind of a tough one to answer.

"And if you were to think about it really logically then perhaps not, but at least in that moment, it's what feels most right for David, and that's generally what's driven David the whole time he's been on the show is to do what's right."

The actor also joked about the dangerous nature of living on Ramsay Street, saying: "Let's not talk about David saying, 'We shouldn't move back to Erinsborough because bad things happen there'. Well, told you so!"

Honda also told Digital Spy that he hopes that Aaron will be able to find love again after losing David, saying: "David loves Aaron too much to want Aaron to live the rest of his life lonely and sad because David's died".

"David does make the choice here too, which is what part of that voicemail is about," he said, referring to a message that David leaves for Aaron.

"He absolutely wants Aaron to move on. I don't know how quickly Aaron should move on, but it is Neighbours so it could be a week or two – I don't know!"
