Neighbours star admits doubts over Mackenzie and Hendrix relationship

Neighbours star Georgie Stone has admitted she had doubts when she first found out that her character Mackenzie would get involved with Benny Turland's Hendrix.

The pair have been growing closer after Mackenzie ended her previous relationship with Richie.

The new couple are keeping their blossoming romance under wraps, waiting for the right moment to tell Harlow (Jemma Donovan) about it, since she's one of Mackenzie's best friend's as well as Hendrix's ex.

But while fans seem excited about the new storyline, Georgie wasn't as into it when she first found out.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, the actress revealed: "I found out from Jemma because she was being briefed on her next storylines. She said, 'Oh my God, Georgie, Harlow and Hendrix are breaking up and then you're getting with Hendrix!'

"I have to admit, I actually didn't like it the first time that I heard about it. I was still in the middle of Mackenzie and Richie's relationship, which I loved so much. I didn't really know how it was going to work and I wasn't really sure."

However, once she started reading what the writers had planned for them, the actress quickly changed her mind.

"I started to really love their dynamic," she said. "It's very fun and different to Mackenzie's prior relationships. So I really love it now and I'm fully on the Mackendrix hype train! And I love working with Benny as well."

While their relationship will come as a surprise to Harlow, fans of the soap shouldn't be as shocked, since Mackenzie and Hendrix's spark was already teased when Georgie first joined the show.

"I thought that it was probably something that would come up again," said the actress. "Looking back, I realised that their relationship was very unresolved. They'd gravitated towards each other quite quickly at the beginning, so I knew that something would happen eventually but I didn't know when or how."

Georgie went on to praise the writing team for calling back to that moment in recent scripts saying that "it hasn't been forgotten, it was just dormant as they explored other relationships".

However, Georgie is also a bit wary of her character embarking on yet another relationship with a bad boy-type, since her last entanglement with Richie ended with him spreading lies about her around school and even ranking her performance in bed on an app called 'The Ladder'.

"Mackenzie is quite reticent to be involved with someone who has the potential to hurt her in that way," said Georgie.

"At the same time, it's discussed that Mackenzie has this fairytale fantasy and she's a very romantic person. She's always looking for that fairytale and that good in someone. She sees that in Hendrix. But I think it's always a fear that he's going to do something stupid!"

What's different in Mackenzie's relationship with Hendrix, according to Georgie, is that the two have a foundation of friendship with makes their romance "so solid".

"They've got that trust and they came to each other when they were both quite broken-hearted. I think what's there that wasn't in other relationships is that friendship and deep trust. I think they probably have a better standing than some of her other relationships."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
