Neighbours stars Jackie Woodburne and Alan Fletcher have revealed a behind-the-scenes secret from an iconic scene in the soap’s history.

The pair have played Susan and Karl Kennedy respectively since 1994, with the on-screen couple getting into their fair share of drama on Ramsey Street.

A famous storyline from 1998 saw Susan discover that Karl had engaged in an affair with Sarah Beaumont, with a heated scene involving Susan slapping her husband in the face.

In a video on the soap’s social media channels, both Woodburne and Fletcher reflected on the famous scene, before revealing a “behind-the-scenes secret.”

“I still feel that slap,” began Fletcher, before Woodburne joked: “That slap! What a great day at the office that was.

“This beautiful couple were just broken apart,” she added, with Fletcher noting that it was a “very intense” scene before the pair revealed a secret from the day of filming.

“We didn’t know it at the time, but I had cut my finger open,” revealed Woodburne. “So when I slapped you, blood just flew all over the set.

“When you covered your face with your hands, the blood came off under your hairline,” recalled Fletcher. “I looked at it and thought ‘My God, she’s hurt herself.’ And that’s why I was sitting there like this [shocked] prior to the slap because I thought you were unwell.

“In fact, they almost didn’t do a second take. They checked to see if you couldn’t notice the blood,” he explained, before Woodburne pointed out that a small drop could still be spotted on her forehead.

“After we filmed the slap and they said ‘cut’ and it was accepted, all the crew lined up faking a slap on me,” added Fletcher, with Woodburne quipping that it was a “good day.”

The pair will return in Amazon Freevee’s revival of the soap, which recently unveiled its first trailer ahead of the series premiere next month.

Neighbours returns on September 18, with new episodes streaming on Mondays to Thursdays for free on Amazon Freevee in the UK and US. Network 10 will retain first-run rights in Australia for the new series.
