Neighbours temporarily suspends filming over coronavirus fears

Neighbours has confirmed that it will be temporarily suspending production as a precaution.

The decision was made as a precaution after an employee recently came into contact with a person who tested positive for the novel coronavirus, reports The Guardian.

Filming is expected to resume on Monday (March 23), with the broadcasting schedule not affected at this stage.

"Production will resume on Monday as planned with no interruption to the on-air or delivery schedule," a show spokesperson said. "The health and well-being of everyone on the set of Neighbours will always be our priority."

Australia has more than 550 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the time of posting.

Earlier this month, the soap cancelled filming in Ireland as well as a Neighbours: Live in Conversation event in London due to concerns over the coronavirus outbreak. Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne, who play Karl and Susan Kennedy, had been planning on travelling to Dublin.

"Due to the current coronavirus situation and cautions around international travel, cast who were flying in from Australia will no longer be visiting the UK for the Neighbours 35th anniversary celebrations," a spokesperson told Digital Spy at the time.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
