Neighbours has received an Australian Writers' Guild award for Sonya Rebecchi's emotional exit episode.

The episode was the 8052nd of the Australian soap opera and featured the death of Sonya (Eve Morey) – a series regular – from ovarian cancer.

Viewers watched Sonya and her husband Toadfish (Ryan Moloney) set off on an emotional road trip to the beach to spend the day with their children.

After telling Toadie that her chemotherapy had no effect on the tumour on her brain, and that she had just days to live, Sonya made him promise to take care of their children and to find love again.

As they watched their children play on the beach, Sonya's breathing became shallow before she eventually fell limp in Toadie's arms. He tried to wake her, but soon realised she had passed.

In March 2018, Morey was told that her contract would not be renewed on the soap. The actress then requested that her character be killed off, seeing no other reason why Sonya would leave her husband and children.

The episode and writer-producer Jason Herbison received the the AWGIE Award for Television Serial on Thursday (August 22), with the Australian Writers' Guild also announcing them as winners on their official Twitter account.

Eve and Ryan were both up for Logie awards for their performances in the episode, but neither of them won.

However, Digital Spy did acknowledge Eve's showstopping performances when we awarded her with our inaugural Badge of Honour.

Neighbours airs on weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK), and at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
