Neil Patrick Harris has been confirmed to be returning to How I Met Your Father.

The actor will return to the How I Met Your Mother spin-off as Barney Stinson, a character he played in the original series from 2005 to 2014, for the show's mid-season finale.

The two-episode mid-season finale, which will debut on Hulu on March 28, was filmed in front of a live studio audience for the first time in the franchise.

How I Met Your Father tells the story of Sophie, played by Hilary Duff, and how she meets the father of her children. Like the original show, it features a format in which a future Sophie (Kim Cattrall) recounts the story.

It isn't the first time Harris has appeared on the show after he made a cameo in the first episode of the second series when Sophie crashes into the back of the car Barney is driving.

Creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger spoke to TV Line about how Harris' cameo came to be.

"We did a creative Zoom with him to talk about what we were thinking, and that was it. He was game, which was so incredible for us. It was the best way we could imagine coming back," Berger said.

Harris earned four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series over the course of his time on the show.

How I Met Your Father debuted in 2022, picking up a second series just a month after its release.

How I Met Your Father is available on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in the UK, with new episodes releasing weekly on Wednesdays.
