Nelson Ledges gets $1.5 million in state funding for improvements

Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park in Garrettsville will receive $1.5 million for improvements to the park.

The state's Controlling Board approved the funding request, which will be used for the design and construction of a glass observation bridge and a wayfinding system for the trails at the ledges area of the park.

"The glass bridge will be a spectacular addition to the park," state Sen. Jerry Cirino, R-Kirtland, whose district includes Portage County, said in a written statement. "Visitors will be able to look straight down into the gorgeous chasm from above the Minnehaha Falls area of the Ledges. This will be something special."

Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park is operated by the Parks and Recreation Division of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The 167-acre public recreation area offers trails and picnicking.

Within the park are rock formations and outcrops with fissures as deep as 60 feet left by receding glaciers. Hikers can follow the trails among the cliffs to see waterfalls and geological rock formations like the Devil's Icebox, Indian Pass and Old Maid's Kitchen.
