NeNe Leakes announces husband's return from hospital after getting diagnosed with cancer again

"Real Housewives of Atlanta" alum NeNe Leakes gave an update on her husband Gregg Leakes' condition after revealing he was battling cancer again.

In late June, the reality star, 53, revealed in a video interview with The Jasmine Brand that her husband was in the hospital for about a week after a resurgence in his battle with cancer. In May 2019, the businessman announced he was cancer-free.

"Gregg is so-so," NeNe Leakes said, noting that he had gone through the surgery before and stayed in the hospital for about 15 days. "I'm sure he'll be home in about a week or so. … I'd love everybody to pray for Gregg. That would be beautiful: Pray for his strength."

"And pray for me, too," she added.

On Thursday, Leakes gave her Twitter followers an update on Gregg's condition, revealing that she dropped out of hosting CBS' "The Talk" that day due to her husband's return from the hospital.

"I was suppose to be hosting the talk today but i got good news that Gregg was coming home after being hospitalized 6 weeks," she wrote.

USA TODAY has reached out to Leakes' representative for further comment.

The couple first married in 1997 and share two children: Bryson and Brentt. After splitting in 2011, they remarried in 2013 during a ceremony filmed for Bravo's spin-off "I Dream of NeNe: The Wedding."

"You have been my light," Gregg Leakes told his bride. “I couldn’t do this without you. I couldn’t. I wouldn’t even try. So I want to thank you, baby."

"It was Cinco de Mayo," she said. “Gregg was in excruciating pain. Like, I’ve never seen him say, 'I'm hurting so bad, the pain is so bad in my stomach.' And finally he said to me, 'Take me to the hospital.' "

At the hospital, Gregg Leakes learned his life was hanging in the balance and that he had to undergo an emergency operation to remove part of his colon that was "infected."

"I guess the scariest part about all of this is when we got to the hospital and the doctor saying that, 'We need to do surgery on you tonight or you ain’t going to make it,'" he said.

"We just weren’t prepared to hear that," NeNe Leakes added.

While sitting with friends and family in a prayer circle, Gregg Leakes revealed he was mentally prepared to die: "I went over and prayed to God and I told Him, 'If it’s time, let’s go. I don’t fear death, I don’t want to go. If my work here is finished here, take care of them, let’s go.' "

He penned his wife a letter in case he didn't survive the surgery.

"I wrote a note to my doctor and I told him to give it to you if I didn’t come out," an emotional Gregg Leakes said while breaking down in tears. "Writing that note was the hardest thing I ever did in my life."

He added: "You never know what’s in you until you at that door. I never thought I had it in me to fight cancer. Now, I want to beat cancer’s (expletive)."
