Some neon signs along Route 66 are being restored

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Neon signs have been a staple of Route 66 in Albuquerque, but some of those neon signs have fallen into disrepair. Now, thanks to grant funding some of those signs are being restored.

NMDOT closer to making decision on plan for stretch of I-40 between Albuquerque and Arizona

Last summer, the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Arts and Culture along with the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency created the revamp Route 66: Sign Improvement Grant Program.

A new sign at The Imperial Inn, near Central and I-25, is part of recent renovations. “We completely renovated all of the hotel rooms, converted some of the hotel rooms into suits and a couple of apartments and we built two buildings from the ground up,” said Westin Glass, Director of Development. “I think it definitely will attract more tourists to the area because they’re just these great landmarks that take us back to an earlier era and it’s just a beautiful thing to see.”

The city said they received more than 25 applications for the grant funding. Of those applicants, Central Grill and Coffee House, The Sandia Peak Inn and The Dog House all received the funding. Which means, you may soon be seeing new signs popping up at those businesses too.
