Nepal urges Russia to stop recruiting Nepalis into its army after 6 killed

Nepal asked Moscow to stop recruiting its citizens into the Russian army and to immediately return any Nepali soldiers currently serving after it was revealed that 6 Nepali soldiers serving in the Russian military had been killed, Reuters reported on Dec. 5.

"The government of Nepal has requested the Russian government to immediately return their bodies and pay compensation to their families," the country’s foreign ministry said.

Diplomatic efforts are underway to secure the release of a Nepali citizen serving in the Russian army who was captured by Ukraine.

About 150-200 Nepalis are working as mercenaries in the Russian army.

Nepalese soldiers, known as Gurkhas, are renowned for their bravery and fighting skills, and have been serving in the British and Indian armies following India’s independence in 1947 under an agreement between the three countries.

The small Himalayan nation, wedged between China and India, has no such agreement with Russia.

Russia is trying to recruit foreigners to avoid announcing a new mobilization before the 2024 presidential elections.

Cuba recently uncovered a human trafficking ring that coerced its citizens into fighting for Russia in the war in Ukraine. At least 119 Cubans have already been trained to fight at a Russian military base south of Moscow.
