Netflix has announced its ambitious new World War II series The Liberator.

The streaming service has recently commissioned the show, and in a difference from many other series on World War II, it's an animated drama series based on events from the conflict.

The official description reads that The Liberator will tell "the riveting true story of the bloodiest and most dramatic march to victory of the Second World War: the battlefield odyssey of maverick U.S. Army officer Felix Sparks and his infantry unit as they fought for over 500 days to liberate Europe".

As above, the show will follow Sparks and the 157th Infantry Regiment from Oklahoma – a National Guard unit comprised primarily of cowboys, Native Americans and Mexican-Americans.

The Liberator is based on Alex Kershaw's 2013 book The Liberator: One World War II Soldier's 500-Day Odyssey from the Beaches of Sicily to the Gates of Dachau.

Netflix has adapted it into a four-part drama, created, written and executive produced by Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Fugitive), and co-produced by Kershaw.

In more Netflix news, a Christmas special for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been officially confirmed, and you won't even have to wait until December 25 to see it.

The show's writer and showrunner, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, confirmed that the special will premiere on December 14, in the run-up to the festive season.
