Netflix To Open Animation Studio In Burbank

BURBANK, CA — Streaming giant Netflix is opening a new animation studio in Burbank. CoStar first reported that Netflix leased 171,000 square feet of office space at Burbank Empire Center, less than a mile away form Hollywood Burbank airport.

The studio will be Netflix' first building dedicated to animation, and will give the company a foothold in the animation capital of the world. Disney, Nickelodeon, and Warner Bros. have long based their animation studios in Burbank.

The Los Gatos-based company has been expanding their Los Angeles presence for quite some time as they look to ramp up their own original content. In 2019, Netflix leased 60,000 sq. ft. of space at Burbank Studios, as a temporary setup until the completion of their new facility on Vine Street. The company also has an office in Hollywood near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and North Van Ness Avenue.

Netflix' addition to Burbank Empire Center will bring the office's capacity up to 100 percent. According to the San Fernando Valley Business Journal, the deal is the largest office lease in L.A. since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, in sharp contrast to many companies who have attempted to downsize office space in the age of telework.

Recently, Maya Rudolph took home an Emmy for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance on Netflix' animated series Big Mouth. The streaming service also offers popular animated shows such as Bojack Horseman and the new Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
