Netflix's powerful miniseries When They See Us has become one of the platform's most watched shows ever.

The four-part series follows the true story of the so-called Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit in 1989.

Creator Ava Duvernay has now shared the news that a massive 23 million accounts have watched the show since its release last month, tweeting: "Imagine believing the world doesn't care about real stories of black people. It always made me sad.

"So when Netflix just shared with me that 23M+ accounts worldwide have watched #WhenTheySeeUs, I cried. Our stories matter and can move across the globe. A new truth for a new day."

Her post was also retweeted by Netflix's Strong Black Lead account, and it comes after Netflix previously revealed that it was the most-watched series in the US every day since its premiere on May 31.

When They See Us follows the stories of Korey Wise, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Kevin Richardson and Raymond Santana, who were wrongfully imprisoned for the attack and rape of a female jogger in New York's Central Park.

The five were later exonerated after years in jail, after an already-convicted murderer and rapist confessed to the crime they were imprisoned for.

The series stars The Wire's Michael K Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Wick's John Leguizamo and Felicity Huffman, while the five boys are played by Asante Blackk, Caleel Harris, Ethan Herisse, Jharrel Jerome and Marquis Rodriguez.

When They See Us is available on Netflix.
