No one knows how to combine horror and comedy like Marlon Wayans, co-writer of the first two Scary Movie films, and he's now starring in the most popular movie on Netflix at the moment, The Curse of Bridge Hollow, alongside Destiny's Child legend Kelly Rowland and Stranger Things star Priah Ferguson.

“I think it was being a father and going through a similar situation with my daughter, and trying to bond with her when she got to a certain age, and learning that your kids are going to teach you more than you’ve got to teach them at certain points in your life,” Wayans said about transitioning into the more family-friendly horror/comedy movie genre. “They're going to crystallize what kind of parent you are based on your relationship, and your decisions and choices with them.”

“I just thought it was about time to make a nice family-friendly horror-comedy and this one plays to all quadrants,...and we got real special effects from a good budget, and a wonderful young starlet at the forefront.”

Wayans plays science teacher Howard Gordon, who moves with his family, wife Emily (Rowland) and daughter Sydney (Ferguson), from Brooklyn to the small town of Bridge Hollow. The family quickly realizes Halloween is a big deal for the community of their new hometown. Mayor Tammy, played by Lauren Lapkus, tells the Gordon family the legend of Stingy Jack, who was hanged to death in Bridge Hollow but the Devil made him a pumpkin lantern and every year, he returns to the town to seek revenge on the descendants of the villagers.

Sydney ends up releasing the spirit of Stingy Jack and she has to work with a group of new friends in Bridge Hollow, and her Halloween-hating dad, to battle this supernatural power.

“I thought the role was very relatable, I like horror so I thought this was a great horror movie for everyone to watch, families, little kids, just a great horror movie in general,” Ferguson said about playing Sydney.

Wayans had a lot of praise for the women he acts alongside with in The Curse of Bridge Hollow.

“I love surrounding myself with women with great sense of humour, that love to laugh, and Priah and Kelly are very similar in that way,” Wayans said. “Strong as their personalities are and as grounded in their performances.”

“They're just a lot of fun to work with because they like to laugh and that makes me silly, and makes me have a good time.”

So what makes the combination of horror and comedy such a great combination to watch? Wayans explains that they have the same beats.

“It's setup, punchline,” Wayans said. “What's that over there? That's the setup, spooky music, open the door, the punch line is something's behind that door.”

“Comedy’s the same thing,...the element of surprise.”
