Is Netflix's Lupin based on a true story?

Omar Sy is all set to bring the "Gentleman Burglar" back to our screens, with Netflix confirming Lupin: Part 2's UK release date. But the question on everyone's lips: Is his character based on a real person?
The show's second instalment will be available to stream from 11 June. Part 1 ended with Assane Diop desperately searching for his son (spoiler alert), while dodging the detective sent to track him down. Yep, we're very excited to see how this plays out.

Essentially, Arsene Lupin is a fictional character. But bare with us, as there are levels to this. His character, which was created by French author Maurice Leblanc in 1905, proved so popular that Leblanc wrote around 20 novels and stories about him.
Arsene Lupin, Gentleman Burglar, the first collection of Leblanc's stories detailing the adventures of Lupin, was released in 1907. In an extremely meta move, Netflix's Lupin incorporates this collection of stories into the series' plot. It's first seen during a flashback, when a younger Assane is given a copy of it. It then reappears later in the series when Assane gives his son a new edition of the same novel.
While Lupin isn't strictly based on a true story, it certainly seems to have drawn some inspiration from real-life events.
In the series pilot, the necklace Lupin steals from the Louvre once belonged to Marie Antoinette. This appears to be based on a real diamond necklace once owned by the French Queen, which caused a scandal in the eighteenth century after a buyer planned to extract and sell its individual diamonds on the Parisian black market.
So no, it's not a real story exactly, but rather a real book. The more you know, eh?
