Nets expected to pursue Gregg Popovich: report

The Brooklyn Nets’ coaching search has begun, and they have their eyes set on one of the greatest of all time.

The Nets are expected to pursue current San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, according to The Athletic. Popovich, 71, has the third-most wins in NBA history (1,277) behind only Don Nelson and Lenny Wilkens. He has the second-best winning percentage (.675) among coaches to lead at least 1,000 games in NBA history behind only Lakers and Bulls legend, Phil Jackson (.704).

Nets GM Sean Marks is expected to request permission from Spurs brass to speak to Popovich about Brooklyn’s coaching opening. The Spurs saw their 23-year playoff stretch snapped this season, finishing with a 32-39 record and 11th in the Western Conference.

The Nets, meanwhile, were eliminated from the playoffs in a 4-0 sweep by the Toronto Raptors. They were short-handed, without Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Spencer Dinwiddie, DeAndre Jordan, Taurean Prince and Wilson Chandler during their short-lived playoff push in the Orlando bubble.
