Nevada Journal sports round-up: Caeden DaSilva places second in 3A boys 200 dash at state track meet

The Nevada boys track team had one individual earn a medal and the Colo-NESCO boys had one runner competing at the state co-ed track meet last Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

The Nevada boys and girls both competed in two relays at the state meet.

The Nevada girls golf team advanced one golfer to state from the Class 3A regional meet at the Terrace Hills Golf Course in Altoona. The Cub girls soccer team thumped Grinnell in its 1A Region 6 opener and the Nevada boys team won its first two 1A substate games.

The Nevada and Colo-NESCO baseball teams also opened the season last week. The Cubs started off 2-2 and the Royals dropped their first two contests.

Here are how Nevada and Colo-NESCO fared during the week.

Caeden DaSilva takes second in the 3A boys 200

A dream ending to his outstanding track career was just out of reach for Nevada's Caeden DaSilva in the 3A boys 200.

DaSilva was going for his first state championship in his final race as a Cub. He went toe-to-toe with defending champion Brevin Doll of Adel-Desoto-Minburn right through the finish line.

DaSilva just started to stumble with in feet of the finish line. He lost his footing and went down just after crossing the line.

After giving everything he could, DaSilva finished in 21.90 — a new PR. Unfortunately for DaSilva, Doll crossed in 21.89 to repeat as champion.

"It was a great race," DaSilva said. "I have a lot of respect for Brevin. Winning it as a freshman last year and this year, that's awesome."

DaSilva's fall across the line showed just how much he wanted to win the race.

"We were neck and neck and at the end I started to lose by form a little bit," DaSilva said. "I said screw it and jumped at the end. I'm just really disappointed I didn't win this one."

DaSilva, who took third in last year's 3A 200 and was also part of multiple relay place-winners as a freshman and junior, didn't want to settle for a silver medal. But it was still a great way to end one of the best track careers in Nevada history.

"Looking back on my career it's been crazy," DaSilva said. "It's been a really good time with teammates like Joven (Nelson) all the way back to my freshman year to guys like Caleb (Kooiker), James (Edwards) and Billy (Gibbons) and all the memories we made here. It's awesome."

DaSilva's 200 preliminary time on Thursday was 22.37. He placed 18th in the 3A boys 100 prelims Thursday with an 11.52 showing.

Friday saw DaSilva team with Billy Gibbons, Karter Beving and Caleb Kooiker to place 14th in the 3A boys 4x200 with a season-best time of 1:32.28.

"We threw this 4x200 team together late in the season," Beving said. "We were battling injuries. We just came out here, had fun and gave it our all."

Cub girls set school record in the shuttle hurdle

The Nevada girls competed in the 3A shuttle hurdle prelims Thursday and the distance medley relay Friday.

The shuttle hurdle team set a new school record in placing 17th during the 3A prelims. The team of Kylie Taylor, Abigail French, Lily Goos and Shelbi Hazlitt ran a time of 1:11.19.

Taylor, Stefany Riera Ramones, Mady Gibson and Tori Meinecke ran in the 3A girls distance medley relay Friday, but they were disqualified after a lane violation.

Kenny Cutler takes 11th in 1A boys 400 hurdles

Colo-NESCO's Kenny Cutler competed in the 1A boys 400 hurdles for the second year in a row last Friday.

After placing sixth as a junior Cutler came in 11th as a senior with a time of 56.62 seconds. Despite a lower placing, Cutler actually ran a faster time than he did a state a year ago when he finished in 56.85.

"It feels good to come back here, especially with all the bad weather and cancellations we've had this year," Cutler said. "It feels good to grind it out and get here and to run against a lot of really good hurdlers."

Olivia Axmear headed to state in girls golf

Nevada sophomore Olivia Axmear is headed to the Class 3A girls state golf meet.

Axmear placed fourth at the 3A Region 2 meet held at the Terrace Hills Course May 18 to qualify individually. She shot an 18-hole score of 79 to earn her spot at state.

Gilbert's Eden Lohrbach was medalist with a 68 and Newton's Rylee Heryford was runner-up with a 70. Gilbert's Macy Underwood placed third with a 76 and the Tigers' Haley Loonan finished fifth with an 81 and Winterset's Jaya West sixth with an 84 as the other state qualifiers from the meet.

Nevada placed fourth as a team with a score of 378. Gilbert won with a 319 and ADM took second with a 366 as the two teams to qualify for state from the regional and Newton placed third with a 367.

Bridget Cahill placed 12th individually for Nevada with a 91. Reagan Schmidt was 24th with a 101 and McKinley Spaid 38th with a 107.

Mary Hensley carded a 110 and Maycin Sansgaard a 123 as the other Cub golfers at the meet.

The 3A girls state meet takes place Thursday and Friday at the River Valley Golf Course in Adel.

Both Nevada soccer teams advance in the postseason

The 10th-ranked Nevada boys soccer team advanced to the 1A substate finals and the fifth-ranked Cub girls won their 1A regional opener last week.

The Nevada boys defeated Grand View Christian by a 10-0 score in the substate quarterfinals May 19 and Clarke by a 4-0 decision in the semifinals Monday to advance to the finals with a 14-6 record. Both games were in Nevada.

Drew Robinson had 4 goals and 1 assist, Edgar Cabrera 3 goals and 2 assists and Ty Dittmer 2 goals and assists apiece for Nevada in the victory over GVC. Jackson Reid also scored 1 goal and Sam Betting had a hand in 2 assists and Kaden Weber 1.

Noah Mills made 1 save at keeper in relief of Owen Freeman in the second half.

Stats fro the Clarke game were not available at press time.

The Nevada girls defeated Grinnell by a 6-0 score in their regional opener May 18.

The Cub girls scored 3 goals each half in improving to 10-6 on the season. Meinecke put up 2 goals and assists apiece, Mayzi Weig achieved a hat-trick with 3 goals, Svannah Skaggs had 1 goal and assist apiece and Isabelle Nelson and Emma Strottman each had 1 assist for the Cubs.

Maddie Dunham made 2 saves and Hazlitt 1 at keeper for the Cub girls.

Nevada baseball team splits first four games

The Nevada baseball team started its 2022 season 2-2.

The Cubs opened with a 9-4 loss to Bondurant-Farrar May 16 at the SCORE Athletic Complex in Nevada. Gavin Melohn tripled and had 1 run and RBI apiece, Beving went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Cael Franzen took the loss after giving up 6 runs, just 1 earned, on 6 hits and 4 walks with 7 strikeouts in 5 innings.

Colton Leslie surrendered 1 run on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts in 2 innings.

The Cubs defeated Grand View Christian by a 7-1 score May 18 at Nevada. Connor Schnettgoecke went 2-for-3 with a double, run and 2 RBIs, Melohn tripled and scored, Franzen was 1-for-2 with 2 runs and Beving was dominant on the mound — firing a 2-hitter with an amazing 16 strikeouts against just 1 walk going the full 7 innings.

Nevada suffered a 17-7 loss at Knoxville May 19. Colin Memmer went 2-for-4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI, Beving scored and drove in a run, Elijah Nelson was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Christian Hawbaker doubled and scored twice, Anthony Eaton singled and Memmer was the losing pitcher after giving up 8 runs — 6 earned — on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk in 3 2/3 innings.

The Cubs won their Heart of Iowa Conference opener Monday with a 6-2 victory at Perry.

Schnettgoecke went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, Beving doubled, scored twice and drove in a run and Nelson was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Franzen singled, walked twice and scored 2 times, Memmer singled, walked twice and scored, Sam Hanson doubled and drove in a run and William Carsrud doubled once.

Carsrud was the winning pitcher against Perry after giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits and 6 walks with 1 strikeout in 4 1/3 innings.

Colo-NESCO falls to DMC and GMG

The Colo-NESCO baseball team suffered a 9-2 loss to Des Moines Christian in its opener May 16 at Zearing.

Trenton Beard was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Lucas Frohwein was 2-for-3 with a double, Spencer Hansen doubled and scored, Andrew Grover doubled and Breckin Clatt scored a run.

Ben Rouse was the losing pitcher after allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.

The Royals were dealt a 10-3 loss at GMG Monday. Stats were not available for the game at press deadline.
