Nevada Journal sports round-up: Cub soccer teams sweep Bondurant-Farrar

The Nevada boys and girls soccer team both defeated West Marshall and Bondurant-Farrar last week and the Cub girls golf team won the Nevada Co-ed Invitational last week.

The Class 2A No. 4 Nevada boys soccer team blanked West Marshall, 4-0, April 3 in State Center and earned a 3-1 victory over Bondurant-Farrar Friday at Cub Stadium in Nevada to improve its record to 4-1 on the season. The 1A No. 4 Nevada girls went to 4-0 after destroying West Marshall at home, 10-0, and earning a 2-0 victory at Bondurant-Farrar.

The Nevada girls golf team opened its season by winning the Nevada Co-ed Invitational at the Indian Creek Country Club in Nevada April 6. The Cub girls shot a 382 over 18 holes to beat West Marshall by eight strokes for first out of four teams.

The Nevada boys took second to Ballard at the Nevada Co-ed Invite with a score of 348.

The Nevada track teams both competed at the Nevada Co-ed Invitational April 6 at Cub Stadium. The Cub boys tied Roland-Story for fifth out of eight schools with a score of 69 and the girls came in seventh out of eight teams with 55 points.

The Nevada boys tennis team picked up the first win in program history April 6 with a 7-2 triumph over Webster City at the SCORE Athletic Complex in Nevada. The Cubs suffered a 7-2 loss to Clear Lake Monday at the SCORE Complex in falling to 1-2 on the season.

The Nevada girls tennis team dropped to 0-2 with a 9-0 loss at Webster City April 6.

The Colo-NESCO boys track team took sixth at the South Hamilton Co-ed Invitational April 6 in Jewell. The Royals scored 76 points.

The Royal girls track team came in sixth at South Hamilton with 47.5 points.

Here is what we learned from this week's Nevada Journal high school sports competition.

Nevada soccer teams impressive

The Nevada soccer teams both turned in strong outings against West Marshall and Bondurant-Farrar to back up their lofty rankings.

The Cub boys got off 31 shots and 17 shots on goal in the victory over West Marshall. They also finished the game with nine corner kicks and they only gave up one.

Drew Robinson recorded a hat-trick with 3 goals, Carson Rhodes added one score and Sam Betting dished out an assist. Keeper Noah Mills only needed to make two saves.

In the win over Bondurant-Farrar the Cubs scored twice in the first half and once in the second. Robinson added 2 more goals and Rhodes added 1 off a great direct kick from Edgar Cabrera for Nevada.

Titus Cram scored the Bluejays' only goal of the game in the first half.

The Nevada girls jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the half and coasted to victory against West Marshall. Avery Anderson picked up a hat-trick with 3 goals, Aubrey Thompson had 2 goals and one assist, Tori Meinecke finished with 1 goal and three assists, Evelyn Anderson tallied 1 goal and assist apiece, Alexa Betting, Melanie Khounsourath and Emma Strottman each scored 1 goal and Lynze Geerdes dished out an assist.

The Cub girls scored 1 goal in each half against Bondurant-Farrar. Meinecke delivered 1 goal and assist apiece, Andreson found the back of the net once and Reagan Davis had a hand in two assists.

Cub keeper Joslynn Farmer only needed to make four saves against the Bluejays.

Cub girls look strong in opening golf meet

The Nevada girls golf team looked tough during the Nevada Invitational to open the season.

Olivia Axmear, a 2022 3A state participant, won medalist honors at ICCC for the Cubs with an 18-hole round of 82. Nevada's Bridget Cahill tied West Marshall's Allie Pfantz for medalist runner-up honors after they each shot an 87.

Reagan Schmidt placed sixth individually for Nevada with a 98. Mary Hensley tied for seventh with a 108 as the final scored Cub golfer, Mya Spykerman came in 12th with a 114 and Caitlin Johnson was 16th with a 119.

The Nevada boys also had a solid outing in placing second behind Ballard's winning score of 321. Kyle Kingsbury led the Cub boys individually by placing fifth with an 83.

Easton Gray and Karter Beving also placed in the top 10 for the boys. Gray took eighth after carding an 85 and Beving shot an 88 to place ninth.

Cub track teams combine for three silver medals at Nevada Invite

The Nevada track teams totaled three silver medals at the Nevada Invitational.

The Cub girls recorded two runner-up performances. Arianna Chappell was runner-up in the varsity girls discus with a throw of 97 feet, 2 inches and the Cub girls 4X800-meter relay team of Brooke Axmear, Sophia Martinez, Alexa Betting and Ava Vanderheyden took second with a time of 11:06.60.

The Nevada girls' shuttle hurdle relay team of Kylie Taylor, Alexis Muschick, Gracie Scheuerman and Lily Goos placed third with a time of 1:16.75. Stefany Riera Ramones took fourth in the 100 with a time of 14.09, Emilee Kelly was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 29-4 and the Cub 4X200 relay team of Taylor, Riera Ramones, Stephanie Lopez and Mady Gibson took fourth in 1:57.43.

In the boys' competition Nevada's Carter Holland placed second in the 800 after crossing the finish line in 2:06.01. Mason Herrold and Isaac Williams, Jaden Grimm and Hunter Barfels placed third in the shuttle hurdle with a 1:10.50 showing.

Connor Kunze was fourth in the boys' 200 with a time of 24.10. Nick Frideres placed fourth in the 1,600 after completing the race in 4:57.07, Jacob Khounsourath took fourth in the high jump with a jump of 5-10 and Jackson Baker was fourth in the long jump with a distance of 19-0.75.

The Nevada boys also had three relay teams place fourth. The Cub 4X100 team of Kunze, Peter Ludwig, Baker and Holland clocked in at 46.69, the 4X800 team of Frideres, Paul Stephens, Brian Rohde and Holland finished in 8:36.91 and the distance medley team of Ludwig, Carson Clem, Austin Waldera and Dawson Lemke ran a 4:10.62.

Nevada boys tennis dominates Webster City

The Nevada boys tennis team was dominant in its victory over Webster City.

The Cubs picked up four singles victories and they swept doubles play against the Lynx.

In singles play Rowan Steele won the No. 1 match over Webster City's Lane Olson by an 8-5 score, Rhett Harter took the No. 3 match over Rowan Nepereny in an 8-0 shutout, Jack Spence blanked Hank Christenson in the No. 5 match, 8-0, and Braeden Moore won the No. 6 match over the Lynx' Cael Alexander by an 8-2 score. Steele and Harter took the No. 1 doubles match over Olson and Alex Cruz in an 8-6 battle, Spence and Moore cruised past Nepereny and Jayden Wibholm in the No. 2 match by an 8-2 margin and Frank Engstrom and Miles Engstrom won the No. 3 match over Christianson and Alexander by an 8-5 score.

In the loss to Clear Lake the Cub boys got one singles and doubles victory apiece.

Moore won the No. 6 singles match over the Lions' Levi Reynolds in an 11-9 battle. Steele and Harter pulled off a tight 10-8 victory over Clear Lake's Ben Loge and Justin Kerr in the No. 1 doubles match.

The Nevada girls couldn't get a win against Webster City, but they did put up a couple of decent fights. Brooklyn Estes lost an 11-9 decision to the Lynx' McKinzey Koestner in the No. 5 singles match, Meagan McGaffin dropped a 10-7 decision to the Lynx' Cyra Christensen in the No. 4 singles match and in the Cub No. 2 doubles team of McGaffin and August Martinez also fell by a 10-7 score to Isabelle Feldhaus and McKinzey Koestner.

Colo-NESCO track teams both win one event at South Hamilton

The Colo-NESCO track teams both picked up one victory at the South Hamilton Co-ed Invitational.

The Royal boys went 1-2 in the shot put. Trenton Beard won the event with a toss of 46-1 and Isaac Harrington got second with a runner-up distance of 42-3.

Jack Angell won a bronze in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 18.23 and he was fourth in the 400 hurdles after clocking in at 1:03.36. Nathan McFarland placed third in the high jump with a jump of 5-4 and Breckin Clatt was fourth in the 200 with a time of 25.08.

As a team the Royal boys placed sixth with 76 points. The Colo-NESCO girls also came in sixth with 47.5 points.

A victory in the distance medley relay was the highlight of the day for the Royal girls. Hannah Matteson, Erynn Dulaney, Emma Lennie and Sophia Clawson finished in 4:53.38 to beat BCLUW by one second for the victory.

That same quartet placed third in the sprint medley for the Colo-NESCO girls with a time of 2:01.80. Haylee Jackson took fourth in the open 100 with a time of 14.49, Clawson jumped 4-6 in the high jump to tie for fourth and the Royal 4X100 team of Gemma Bower, Lennie, Dulaney and Matteson also placed fourth with a 57.49 showing.
