Nevada Journal sports round-up. Cub girls soccer team wins thrilling opener over Gilbert

The Class 1A No. 4 Nevada girls soccer team downed No. 5 Gilbert in a 3-2 shootout to open the season March 27 at Cub Stadium in Nevada.

The Cub girls also blanked Ballard, 6-0, March 28 at Huxley and West Marshall, 10-0, Monday at Nevada in getting off to a 3-0 start.

The Nevada boys soccer team started off 3-1. The Cubs fell at Gilbert, 1-0, in their opener then pounded Ballard, 8-0, at the S.C.O.R.E Complex in Nevada, edged Newton by a 2-1 score at Newton and blanked West Marshall on the road, 4-0.

The Nevada boys track team opened its outdoor season by hosting the Nevada Invitational March 28 at Cub Stadium and placing third in Class A with 322 points. The Cub girls finished second at the Jayette Relays in Perry March 30 with 144 points in their first outdoor meet.

The Nevada boys tennis team opened its first season with a 6-5 loss to Saydel March 30 in Nevada. The Cub girls tennis team suffered a 9-2 loss at Saydel March 30.

The Colo-NESCO boys opened their track season by finishing third at Des Moines Christian with 109 points March 28. The Royal girls placed sixth at the DMC meet with 49.5 points.

Here is what we learned from the first full week of spring sports for Journal high school teams.

Cub soccer teams off to a hot start

The Nevada girls soccer team is looking every bit its lofty No. 4 ranking to start the season.

In the opening win over Gilbert the Cubs received 1 goal apiece from Evelyn Anderson and Aubrey Thompson in the second half to force overtime. Anderson followed a Gilbert goal each time, scoring off a direct kick for the first goal and Thompson converted a ball from Tori Meinecke into a score following corner kick by Isabelle Nelson for the second score.

After neither team could score in the first or second overtimes the game went into a shootout.

Nevada keeper Joslynn Farmer made a stop on Gilbert's first attempt and the Tigers second shot went high. The Cubs also missed their first shot, but then Reagan Davis, Anderson, Lynze Geerdes and Mady Gibson all converted their attempts to win the game.

The Cubs scored three goals in each half during their win over Ballard. Avery Anderson had a hat-trick with 3 goals, Nelson had 1 goal and assist apiece, Thompson and Melanie Khounsourath each netted 1 goal, Meinecke dished out two assists and Farmer only needed to make one save.

In the victory over West Marshall Avery Anderson turned in another hat-trick with 3 more scores, Thompson finished with 2 goals and one assist, Meinecke tallied three assists and 1 goal and Evelyn Anderson had 1 goal and assist apiece. Alexa Betting, Khounsourath and Emma Strottman each chipped in 1 goal and Geerdes dished out an assist.

The Nevada boys only got off six shots and two shots on goal in their opening loss to Gilbert. Drew Robinson had two shots and one shot on goal, Edgar Cabrera one apiece and Carson Rhodes, Aidan Freeman and Kyle Kingsbury each finished with one shot.

Gilbert had 10 shots and seven shots on goal. Cub keeper Noah Mills made five saves and the lone Tiger goal came from Truman Kruckenberg.

The Cub boys jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the half and coasted the rest of the way against Ballard. Robinson finished with 4 goals and one assist, Betting, Kyle Kingsbury and Kent Sponseller 1 goal and assist apiece, Owen Freeman 1 goal and Cabrera two assists.

In the win over Newton all the scoring was done in the first half.

Robinson and Dylan Fritz each scored a goal for Nevada. Cabrera dished out two assists and Sponseller was credited with one. Mills made two saves and the lone goal from Newton was by Caleb Mattes.

No stats were available for the West Marshall game at press deadline.

Nevada boys win two events at the Nevada Invitational

The Nevada boys earned two victories and seven other top-three finishes at its home meet to open the season.

Freshman Connor Kunze won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.86 seconds to just beat out the 11.87 run by both Aidan Richards and Jaden Damiano of Iowa Falls-Alden. Carter Holland won the 1,600 in 4:47.18, topping the 4:49.31 effort by Carroll's Ryan North.

Nick Frideres just missed out on a gold medal in the 800. Frideres ran a 2:07.72 to come in just a hair behind the 2:07.43 effort by Mason City's Ra'shaun Wynter. Brian Rhode was second in the 3,200 with a time of 10:46.34, trailing only North's 10:32.13.

Kunze and Jacob Khounsourath were third and fourth in the 200 with respective times of 23.98 and 24.37.

The Cub distance medley team of Peter Ludwig, Carson Clem, Austin Waldera and Rhode took third in 4:06.41. Kunze, Ludwig, Jackson Baker and Khounsourath won bronze in the 4X100 with a 46.44 showing.

Nevada also placed third in the shuttle hurdle with a time of 1:10.96.

Cub girls claim six victories at Perry

The Nevada girls track team totaled 17 top-three finishes at the Jayette Invitational.

The Cubs won six events during the meet. They took first in the 4X100 (55.65), 4X200 (2:00.03) and 4X800 (11:28.96) relays and also picked up three individual titles.

Ava Vanderheyden and Alexa Betting were first and second in the 800 with respective times of 2:49.85 and 3:03.11. Arianna Chappell and Emilee Kelly went one-two in the discus with throws of 99-9 and 83 feet even and Lily Goos won the 400 hurdles in 1:20.79.

Nevada placed second in the 4X400 (5:04.96) and sprint medley (2:11.04) relays and third in the shuttle hurdle (1:18.39) and distance medley (5:47.93). Stefany Riera Ramones won silver in the 100 (13.90) and Sophia Ramirez (1:12.01) and Brooke Axmear (1:12.17) were second and third in the 400.

Axmear also placed third in the 1,500 (6:02.55), Lilian Frideres won bronze in the 3,000 (13:32.11) and Bryn Crain was third in the 200 (31.30).

Cub boys tennis team falls just short

The Nevada boys tennis team fell just short of winning the first meet in school history with its loss to Saydel.

The Cubs picked up victories from Jack Spence and Samuel Loux in singles play. Spence defeated Saydel's Aiden Reeves by an 8-1 score in the No. 4 singles match and Loux won the No. 6 match over the Eagles' Barrett Weispfenning by an 8-2 margin.

In doubles play Nevada's teams of Mason Harrold and Frank Engstrom won the No. 3 match over Saydel's team of Reeves and Max Jones by an 8-6 score. The Cub No. 4 team of Spence and Braeden Moore also prevailed by an 8-6 margin over Saydel's Barrett Weispfenning and AJ Ollin.

Results for the boys' No. 5 doubles match and the Nevada girls entire meet with Saydel were not available at press deadline.

Colo-NESCO boys earn nine top-three finishes at Des Moines Christian

The Colo-NESCO boys track team won one event, placed second three times and brought home five bronze medals at the Des Moines Christian Invitational.

Nathan McFarland won the boys high jump for the Royals after clearing the bar at 5-10. Baxter's Treyton Travis was second with a jump of 5-8.

Lucas Frohwein finished the open 400 in 58.09 to take second to Des Moines Christian's Hunter Jingst, who clocked in at 52.75. The Royal 4x200 team finished in 1:48.93 to place second to Des Moines Christian's 1:40.94 and its shuttle hurdle team ran a 1:12.67 in the shuttle hurdle to finish runner-up to Baxter's 1:10.57.

Breckin Clatt was third in the 200 with a time of 24.89, Jack Angell won bronze in the 110 high hurdles with a 17.97 effort and Trenton Beard was third in the shot put with a toss of 40-10. The Royals also won bronze in the 4X400 (3:55.25) and sprint medley (1:45.45).

The Colo-NESCO girls earned one gold, two silver and three bronze medals in Des Moines.

Sophia Clawson won the high jump with a 4-10 effort. She easily beat the runner-up jump of 4-6 by Baxter's Camryn Russell.

The Royal girls' 4X400 team took second in 5:02.22, trailing only Baxter's 4:56.58. Colo-NESCO's distance medley team finished in 5:04.98 to come in behind Grand View Christian's 5:01.71 for runner-up honors.

Gemma Bower placed third in the 400 hurdles with a 1:28.48 showing. The Royal 4X200 also won bronze in 2:33.19 and their sprint medley team took third in 2:22.47.
