Nevada Journal sports round-up: Cub basketball teams sweep South Hamilton, Saydel

The Nevada boys and girls basketball teams both swept South Hamilton and Saydel, the Cub girls crowned a total of six champions at four tournaments and the Nevada boys wrestling team produced one champion at the Jones Brothers Invitational in Iowa Falls last week.

The Nevada boys basketball team took down South Hamilton in a 62-55 battle Dec. 13 in Nevada and the Cubs trounced Saydel in Des Moines Friday, 72-50. The two victories put Nevada at 4-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference and 6-1 overall.

The Cub girls won a 35-34 thriller over South Hamilton Dec. 13 and they blew out Saydel by a 58-34 score Friday. They improved to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the HOIC.

The Nevada girls wrestling team produced four champions at the Boone Invitational Saturday. They had two wrestlers take first at the Panorama Scramble Dec. 13 in Panora.

The Nevada boys wrestling team finished 11th at the Jones Brothers Invite after scoring 47 points. The Cubs crowned one champion at the tournament.

The Colo-NESCO boys basketball team defeated GMG by a 74-56 score Dec. 13 at Garwin. The Royals also earned a 57-49 victory over BCLUW Friday at Colo to put their record at 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

The Colo-NESCO girls fell to GMG by a 59-35 score and BCLUW by a 29-14 margin. The two losses put the Royals at 1-4 in the ISC South and 1-6 overall.

Here is what we learned from last week's performances by Nevada and Colo-NESCO.

Cub boys outlast Hawks and dominate Eagles

The Nevada boys basketball team held off a pesky South Hamilton team Dec. 13.

The Cubs roared out to a 22-7 lead early in the second quarter only to see the Hawks claw their way back within 46-44 with 5:39 left in the fourth quarter.

A Kyle Kingsbury basket and 3-pointers from Easton Gray and John Nelson off assists from Jacob Khounsourath pushed Nevada's lead back out to 54-44 and the Cubs were able to hold on from there.

Nevada prevailed despite shooting just 30.3% from the field and being outrebounded, 46-39. The Cubs forced 24 turnovers and only committed 12 and they made nine 3-pointers while limiting South Hamilton to a 2 of 16 shooting effort from long range.

Khounsourath had 13 points, six assists and three steals in the win for Nevada. Gray hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points off the bench, John Nelson tallied 11 points and seven rebounds and Carson Rhodes finished with 8 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for the Cubs.

Nevada jumped out to a huge lead and cruised to victory Friday against Saydel. The Cubs led 25-11 after one quarter and by the end of the third quarter they held a 56-33 advantage.

Nevada outrebounded Saydel, 34-27. The Cubs also forced 15 turnovers and only committed seven and they made 16 3-pointers compared to just two for the Eagles.

Khounsourath and Nelson both had strong all-around games against Saydel. Khounsourath finished with 17 points and six rebounds and assists apiece and Nelson had 13 points, seven boards and six assists.

Gray added 14 points and five rebounds, Kane Williams 11 points and three rebounds and Rhodes 4 points, seven rebounds and four assists and blocks apiece against the Eagles.

Nevada girls get exciting win over South Hamilton

The Nevada girls basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak in dramatic fashion with its victory over South Hamilton Dec. 13.

The Cubs were down 28-23 early in the fourth quarter. After sputtering on offense in the third quarter they woke up just in time, outscoring the Hawks 12-6 down the stretch to pull off the comeback win.

An Emma Strottman putback with 1:11 left gave Nevada its first lead of the fourth quarter at 33-32. South Hamilton briefly went back in front on two Makena Galetich free throws with 1:03 left, but Nevada countered with the eventual winning basket 16 seconds later on another Strottman putback.

Nevada center Isabelle Nelson made a clutch block on a Hallee Feaker drive with 20 seconds left and South Hamilton's Tanna Thompson missed two free throws with four seconds left to secure the win for the Cubs.

Nelson had 14 points, eight rebounds and one block and Strottman 10 points, 14 rebounds and one block for Nevada in the win. Avery Hinson added 5 points and three steals and Bridget Cahill pulled down six rebounds.

In the win over Saydel the Cubs overcame a sluggish start by outscoring the Eagles 22-3 in the second quarter. Nevada shot 43.1% from the field and held Saydel to 25.6% shooting and the Cubs forced 21 turnovers and had a 37-28 rebounding advantage.

Strottman put up 16 points and nine rebounds and Cahill made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and four boards against Saydel. Hinson and Nelson added 8 points apiece and Hinson also had three steals and two assists and Nelson seven rebounds and three assists.

Reagan Davis chipped in 7 points and three steals versus the Eagles.

Mackenzie Arends, Haley Jones and Leslie sisters shine at Boone

Mackenzie Arends, Haley Jones, Gracie Leslie and Ashlyn Leslie all took first at the Boone Invitational for the Nevada girls wrestling team Saturday.

Arends went 3-0 at 190 pounds. She pinned Manson Northwest Webster's Allisa Anderson in 34 seconds, won a 3-0 decision over Boone's Cadence Heggen and pinned Ames' Caroline Orr in 3:09.

Jones was 2-0 at 170. She picked up pins over Ogden's Hannah Wells in 1:59 and Ames' Julia Hard in 27 seconds.

Gracie Leslie pinned South Central Calhoun's Delanie Westcott in 1:32 and picked up a 5-1 decision over Gilbert's Hadley Boshart at 130. Ashlyn Leslie scored a fall over Ogden's Sydney King in 1:07 and she pulled off a 6-5 decision over South Central Calhoun's Lacey Martin at 110.

Mia Reichart (135), Krystal Rickman (155) and Grayce Coree (235) each finished second for Nevada at Boone.

Reichart picked up three pins and she also had two losses by fall. Rickman was 1-2 with one pin and Coree split two matches with her win coming by fall over Gilbert's Macy Underwood.

Miah Huff took third at 105, Dakota Hastings fourth and Katie Spalding fifth at 125 and Elizabeth Vaskova fourth at 190 for the Cubs.

At the Panorama Invitational Arends and Huff both placed first after they each went 2-0 with a pair of wins by fall. Spalding, Gracie Leslie, Reichart and Jones each took second with a 1-1 record.

Vaskova, Rickman and Kennedy Long each placed third and Coree fourth at Panorama.

Kaden Weber places first at the Jones Brothers Invite

Kaden Weber took first place at 113 for the Nevada boys wrestling team at the Jones Brothers Invitational Saturday.

Weber went 2-0 to improve his season record to 8-0. He pinned BCLUW-South Hardin's Logan Drury in 2:35 and won the title match over Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center's Austin Shepard by fall in 2:37.

Jaden Grimm (126) and Nate Anderson (285) both placed fifth and Isaac Williams (152) finished sixth for Nevada.

Grimm went 2-2 with a 6-3 win over Iowa Valley's Carter Hassebroek in the consolation first round and a 10-4 decision over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura's Jace Hendrickson in the fifth-place match. Anderson was also 2-2 with a 4-2 victory over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura's Tristan Smith in the consolation first round and a pin over Newman Catholic's Jackson Sable in 36 seconds during the fifth-place match.

Williams was 1-3 with a win by fall over BCLUW-South Hardin's Wyatt Guiles in 2:43 during the quarterfinals.

Hot shooting and strong rebounding lift Royal boys past GMG

The Colo-NESCO boys basketball team used a dominant stretch in the middle of the game to put away GMG Dec. 13.

After only leading by two points through the first quarter Colo-NESCO was able to outscore GMG 42-14 over the second and third quarters. The Royals went up 38-24 at the half and they outscored the Wolverines 20-4 in the third quarter to ice the game.

The Royals shot 56% from the field and held GMG to 36.4% shooting. They also posted a 39-19 rebounding advantage, which helped them overcome 22 turnovers.

Lucas Frohwein put up 21 points and eight rebounds off the bench to lead a balanced Colo-NESCO attack. Gannon Short, Spencer Hansen and Lucas Daggett each scored 11 points and Mark Bower added 10.

Short tacked on three rebounds, Hansen nine rebounds and six assists, Daggett nine rebounds and Bower eight assists. Drew Banks chipped in 4 points, five rebounds and three steals.

In the win over BCLUW the Royals overcame a poor 35.7% shooting night with 37 rebounds, including 14 offensive boards, and 10 steals.

Colo-NESCO led BCLUW 29-18 at the half. The Royals went up by 15 points after three quarters, which was enough of a cushion to withstand a late Comet charge.

Frohwein had a huge game against BCLUW. He went for 30 points and 15 rebounds, making 12 of 19 field goals on the night.

Hansen added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. Breckin Clatt scored 7 points and Bower recorded eight assists and five rebounds.

Colo-NESCO girls show inconsistency in two ISC South losses

The Colo-NESCO girls basketball team had a tough time defensively against GMG and a rough night offensively in its loss to BCLUW.

The Royals couldn't overcome GMG's 55.3% shooting in their loss to the Wolverines. They only shot 28.6% and made just 1 of 14 3-pointers on offense.

GMG led 27-17 at the half and went up by 15 points after three quarters to put the game away.

Jadyn Niemeyer had 8 points and three steals, Abigail Kettwig 7 points and three rebounds, Gemma Bower 6 points and four boards and Hannah Matteson 5 points and six rebounds against the Wolverines.

Colo-NESCO only shot 9.7% from the field in its loss to BCLUW. The Royals were 0 of 11 from 3-point range and they had 26 turnovers.

A solid defensive effort kept Colo-NESCO within striking distance in the first half. The Royals only trailed 14-7 at the half, but they went scoreless in the third quarter to allow the Comets to pull away.

Sydney Ingle had 5 points, nine rebounds and three steals off the bench for Colo-NESCO against BCLUW. Niemeyer, Matteson, Kettwig and Abigail Hostetler each scored 2 points.
