Nevada Journal sports round-up: Cub boys basketball team runs winning streak to five

The Nevada boys basketball team ran its winning streak to five games with an 81-43 dismantling of Perry Jan. 3 at Perry. The victory put the Cubs at 8-1 on the season and 6-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Nevada also rolled past Greene County in its final game before Christmas break, winning 87-56 Dec. 20 at the Nevada High School Field House in Nevada.

The Cub girls basketball program suffered a 44-32 loss at Perry in falling to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the HOIC. The girls thumped Greene County before the break, 51-10.

The Nevada wrestling team fell to Creston and Gilbert by respective scores of 77-6 and 75-6 in a double dual at Nevada Jan. 7. The Cubs placed 13th out of 15 teams at the Mustang Invitational in Monroe Saturday with 46 points.

The Nevada girls wrestling team placed sixth at the Osage girls tournament Jan. 2 with 102 points, crowned four champions at the Nevada Round Robin Tournament Jan. 5 in Nevada and they took 13th out of 31 teams at the Ogden Girls Gold Tournament Saturday with 65 points. No team scoring was kept for the Round Robin Tournament.

The Colo-NESCO boys basketball team suffered a 53-48 loss at Collins-Maxwell Dec. 20, a 48-41 loss to Don Bosco Jan. 3 at Colo and a 63-32 loss to Lynnville-Sully Saturday at Colo. The Royals fell to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

The Royal girls were dealt a 56-13 loss by Collins-Maxwell, a 41-16 defeat at the hands of Don Bosco and a 41-24 setback at Madrid Jan. 5. The Colo-NESCO girls dropped to 1-9 overall and 1-6 in the ISC South.

Here is what we learned from this week's Nevada Journal area high school sports competition.

Nevada boys look impressive

The Nevada boys basketball team closed the December and opened the January portions of its schedule in impressive fashion.

In the victory over Greene County the Cubs shot 50.8% from the field and posted a 41-31 rebounding advantage. Jacob Khounsourath had 24 points, eight assists and four blocks and Will Palmer put up 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench for Nevada in the win.

Easton Gray added 14 points, Kane Williams 11, Kyle Kingsbury 10 plus three assists and Carson Rhodes 10 rebounds against the Rams.

Nevada overcame a sluggish start to easily get past Perry in its first game back from the break. The Cubs fell behind 16-13, but then outscored the Bluejays 28-9 in the second quarter to break the game open.

Nevada was red hot from the outside against Perry, making 15 of 33 3-pointers on the night. The Cubs also forced 21 turnovers defensively.

Khounsourath went for 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists against Perry. Easton Gray made 5 of 11 3-pointers and scored 15 points, John Nelson had 11 points and three assists and steals apiece and Rhodes finished with 8 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.

Defense shines for Nevada girls in win over Greene County

The Nevada girls were on top of their game in the victory over Greene County before the break.

The Cubs held the Rams to 20% shooting and forced 30 turnovers. They jumped out to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter and only gave up two points in each of the final three quarters.

On offense Nevada did a great job taking care of the ball in only committing four turnovers. The Cubs also had 18 offensive rebounds.

Isabelle Nelson had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals and Reagan Davis 9 points and five rebounds for Nevada. Emma Strottman added 6 points, five rebounds and four assists and Cinamon Hazlitt also scored 6 points.

Nevada couldn't overcome a slow start to each half in its loss to Perry. The Cubs were outscored 9-4 in both the first and third quarters and they only shot 28% from the field and had 22 turnovers.

Strottman had 9 points, four rebounds and three assists and Nelson 8 points and rebounds apiece against Perry. Bridget Cahill chipped in 4 points and seven rebounds.

Kaden Weber takes first at Mustang Invite

Cub junior Kaden Weber pushed his season record to 15-0 by taking first at 113 pounds during the Mustang Invitational.

Weber, ranked third at 113 in Class 2A by IAwrestle.com, pinned Eh Na of Des Moines North-Hoover in 1:35 and defeated Earlham's Nathan Hanson by injury default to reach the finals. In the championship match Weber pinned Colfax-Mingo's Carson Fitch in 3:58.

Jaden Grimm and Nate Anderson came in seventh at 126 and 285 respectively as the only other Cubs to place during the tournament.

Grimm bounced back from an opening-round loss to pin Chariton's Jacobie Garland in 2:47 and Knoxville's Braylon Trout in 1:27 before losing to PCM's Remmington Fry in the consolation semifinals. He rebounded to pin Earlham's Josh Winey in 56 seconds during the seventh-place match.

Anderson received two byes and suffered two losses to end up wrestling for seventh at 285. He pinned Colfax-Mingo's Jermaine Cross in 1:24 during the seventh-place match to improve his record to 10-8 on the season.

Nevada also took on Creston and Gilbert in a double-dual meet at the Nevada High School Field House Jan. 3. The Cubs suffered a 77-6 loss to Creston and a 75-6 setback at the hands of Gilbert.

Weber accounted for both Nevada victories at the double dual. He pinned Creston's Kylen Parson in 2:56 and Gilbert's John Artz in 1:32.

Mackenzie Arends wins two tournaments for Nevada girls

Nevada sophomore Mackenzie Arends won two more championships and added a runner-up finish in girls wrestling during the week.

Arends, ranked second at 190, placed first at Kuemper Catholic and Ogden and she took second at Osage.

Arends pinned Ridgeview's Alexis Meyer in 33 seconds and won a 2-0 decision over 10th-ranked Kaylee Nachtigal of Spencer in her two matches at Kuemper Catholic. She pinned Meyer in 19 seconds and Dallas Center-Grimes' Halley Beaudet in 5:16 and won another close battle with Nachtigal, this time by a 2-1 score, at Ogden.

At Osage Arends pinned Boone's Rori Cook in 2:41 and South Winneshiek's Isabelle Kipp in 2:29 before losing a 5-0 decision to ninth-ranked Alyson Krum of East Buchanan.

During the Kuemper Catholic Tournament Nevada also had Ashlyn Leslie (110 gold) and Dakota Hastings (125 silver) place second and Gracie Leslie (130 gold), Kennedy Long (135 silver) and Krystal Rickman (155 gold) each take third. Ashlyn Leslie was 2-1 with two falls, Hastings 1-1 with a win by decision, Gracie Leslie 2-1 with two pins, Long 1-2 with a fall and Rickman 2-1 with a pin and a win by injury default.

At Ogden Ashlyn went 3-2 with three falls in placing fourth at 110 and Gracie was 4-2 with three wins by fall and one by decision. At Osage Ashlyn went 3-1 with three pins to place second, Gracie took third with four pins and a 4-1 record, Miah Huff was fifth at 105 with three falls in five matches, Haley Jones placed seventh at 170 with a pin, win by decision and victory by medical forfeit in five matches and Hastings placed eighth with two falls in four matches.

The Nevada girls also hosted the Nevada Round Robin Jan. 5 in Nevada. The Leslie sisters and Arends were all 3-0 with three pins, Hastings was 3-0 with two pins and a win by decision and Jones was 2-1 with two victories by fall

Emma Lennie (110D), Miah Reichert (135C) and Rickman (155B) each scored one pin for Nevada.

Colo-NESCO boys, girls struggle in first week back

The Colo-NESCO boys and girls basketball teams both had a rough start to January.

Both teams lost their final game before Christmas at Collins-Maxwell.

The Royal boys let an 11-point lead slip away against Colo-NESCO. They were outscored 34-18 in the second half.

Lucas Frohwein had 20 points and 12 rebounds against Collins-Maxwell. Spencer Hansen finished with 12 points and six boards.

The Colo-NESCO girls fell behind 30-9 at the half and never recovered against Collins-Mawell. The Royals shot just 14.7% from the field and scored just four points over the final two quarters.

Annabelle Nessa had 5 points and two rebounds for the Royal girls in the loss.

Both teams struggled offensively in the doubleheader loss to Don Bosco in their first game back from break.

The Royal boys shot just 26.8% from the field against the Dons and they were outrebounded, 36-30. Frohwein had 21 points and eight rebounds and Breckin Clatt 9 points and four boards in the loss.

The girls hung tough early against Don Bosco, only trailing 16-8 at the half. But they continued struggling offensively and couldn't slow down the Dons in the second half, finishing the game shooting just 14.9% from the field and turning the ball over 29 times.

Callie Kohlwes had 4 points, five rebounds and three steals against Don Bosco. Sydney Ingle added 3 points and four rebounds.

Te Royal girls started slow and couldn't recover in time during the loss to Madrid. They trailed 38-16 after three quarters.

The shooting woes continued for the girls as they only shot 16.7%. They did play tough defensively, forcing 22 turnovers on the night.

Jessica Duran scored 8 points and Gemma Bower had 7 points and five rebounds against Madrid.

Colo-NESCO welcomed four new inductees into the Colo-NESCO Hall of Pride Saturday: Wayne Cafferty (retired teacher and coach), Jeremy Dewitt (Class of 1991), Dustin Springer (Class of 1998 represented by his parents, Larry and Gayle), and Kathy Hovick (former teacher, administrator and coach).

The Colo-NESCO boys ended the week with a rough loss to Lynnville-Sully. The Royals fell behind 20-6 after one quarter and never got in a groove as the Hawks outscored them 34-15 in the second half.

The boys only shot 22.7% and they were outrebounded, 45-29.

Frohwein had a double-double against the Hawks with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Gavin Short scored 6 points and Clatt had 5 points and four rebounds off the bench and Drew Banks added 4 points and five boards for Colo-NESCO.
