Nevada Journal sports round-up: Cub girls wrestling takes third at Perry

The Nevada girls wrestling team took third out of 12 teams at the Perry Invitational Saturday.

The Cubs scored 109.5 points to trail only Perry (173.5) and S.W.A.T. Valkyrie (131) in the final team standings. Nevada also produced four champions and had three wrestlers take second at the Ballard Scramble Jan. 9 in Huxley.

The Nevada wrestling team placed 10th at the Tiger Invitational in Adel Saturday with 16 points. Dallas Center-Grimes easily won the tournament with a score of 236.5.

In dual meets Nevada lost to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, 41-18, and Clear Lake, 66-6, in a double dual at Clear Lake Jan. 17. On Jan. 19 the Cubs suffered losses to Boone (48-28) and Roland-Story (42-24) at Story City.

The Nevada girls basketball team fell to Clear Lake (58-24) Jan. 10 and downed Newton (44-35) Jan. 12 and Prairie City-Monroe (44-40) Friday in going to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. All three games took place in Nevada.

The Cub boys basketball team saw its five-game winning streak end with losses to Clear Lake (67-50) and Newton (69-45). Nevada hammered PCM, 60-33, to push its record to 9-3 overall and 7-1 in the HOIC.

The Colo-NESCO boys basketball team suffered a 66-46 loss at Baxter Jan. 10 in dropping to 3-4 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division. The Royals rebounded with wins over Colfax-Mingo (60-38) Jan. 12 and Melcher-Dallas (68-54) Saturday to improve their overall record to 6-7.

The Colo-NESCO girls lost to Baxter (62-23) Jan. 10 and Melcher-Dallas (49-33) Saturday at Liberty Center in falling to 1-11 overall and 1-7 in the ISC South.

Here is what we learned from this week's high school sports competition by Nevada Journal teams.

Mackenzie Arends takes first and four Cub girls place second at Perry

The Nevada girls had one champion and four runner-up finishes at the Perry Invitational.

Mackenzie Arends, ranked second at 190 pounds, was the Cub champion. Arends received a bye then pinned I-35's Ciera Hutton-Spieker in 1:36 to reach the finals, where she stuck S.W.A.T Valkyrie's Ellen Gerlock in 44 seconds to put her record at 24-2 on the season.

Miah Huff (105), Emma Lennie (110), Dakota Hastings (125) and Mia Reichart (135) all placed second for Nevada at Perry.

Huff received a bye then pinned Eagle Grove's Evelyn Jergenson in 3:22 to reach the finals, where she lost to Perry's Mercedes Ponce by fall in going to 15-14 on the season. Lennie went to 7-12 on the season after pinning Panorama's Jeslyn Ortega in 47 seconds and losing by fall to Martensdale St. Marys Gretchen Wearmouth.

Hastings lost by fall to Perry's Ayden Erickson and came back to pin Panorama's Jacie Baker in 2:55 and defeat Perry's Amy Aguirre by ultimate tiebreaker, 5-4, to push her record to 14-16. Reichart went to 19-17 on the season after pinning teammate Kennedy Long in 45 seconds and Logan-Magnolia's Lillian Kerger in 1:31 before losing by fall to Urbandale's Ella Anliker.

Haley Jones placed third at 170 after losing by fall to Martensdale St. Marys Breanna Ott and coming back to win the third-place match over Urbandale's Jaela Wills by tech fall, 16-1. Jones improved to 17-13 on the season.

Krystal Rickman was 2-2 with a pair of falls at 155, Graci Schiller earned one fall and placed seventh at 145, Long picked up one pin and placed seventh at 135 and Katie Spalding earned one fall and placed fourth at 120 for the Cubs.

Arends, Hastings, Gracie Leslie and Reichart all placed first for Nevada at the Ballard Scramble. No team scoring was kept at the meet.

Arends won her only match by pinning Baxter's Hope Good in 43 seconds. Leslie pinned Gilbert's Hadley Boshart in 1:49 and West Marshall's Madelynn Grossnickle in 3:10 and Reichart downed Southeast Polk's Paige Hodges in 48 seconds and West Marshall's Madelyn Thompson in 1:17.

Lennie, Ashlyn Leslie and Grayce Coree each finished second for Nevada at Ballard.

Lennie lost by fall to Southeast Polk's Shelby Shrock and pinned Raccoon River-Northwest's Ainsley Henderson in 2:16. Leslie lost by fall to Eagle Grove's Jaymie Anderson and she came back to pin Williamsburg's Madison Kirby in 50 seconds.

Coree pinned Gilbert's Macy Underwood in 3:45 and lost by fall to Ames' Cynthia Ellis in 3:25.

Three Cub wrestlers place at ADM

Nevada had three wrestlers place at the Tiger Invitational.

Payton Mosinski was fifth at 170, Isaac Williams sixth at 145 and Nate Anderson sixth at 285.

Mosinski went 2-2 with a 10-3 victory over Waukee Northwest's Ryan Opfer and a win by fall over Adel-Desoto-Minburn's Plagman in 3:32 during the fifth-place match. Williams and Anderson were both 0-3 with a bye.

During the dual loss to GHV at Clear Lake Anderson pinned Tristan Smith in 3:19, Williams earned a 9-5 decision over Parker Stearns and Jaden Grimm picked up a 10-8 victory over Jace Hendrickson. Kaden Weber added a win by forfeit at 113.

Nevada's only victory against Clear Lake came when Weber pinned the Lions' Jeseb Prestholt in 2:09.

The Cubs picked up one pin, one win by major decision and three forfeits against Boone in the double dual at Story City. Mosinski pinned the Toreadors' Pedro Gonzalez in 3:48, Weber downed Jordan McCloud by a 15-4 major decision at 120 and Quentin Tolle (195), Nicholas Lauritzen (220) and Anderson each received a forfeit.

Weber won by fall and Nevada picked up three victories by forfeits in the dual with Roland-Story. Weber pinned Roland-Story's Kooper Spalding in 1:22 at 113 and Williams, Mosinski and Jaden Grimm (126) each received a forfeit.

Defense lifts Nevada girls past PCM and Newton

The Nevada girls basketball team was completely overpowered in the first half during its loss to Clear Lake.

The Cubs were outscored 45-9 over the first two quarters by the Lions. They only shot 29.4% from the field compared to Clear Lake's 55% effort and the Cubs had had 22 turnovers and were outrebounded 25-18.

Isabelle Nelson had 8 points and five rebounds and Emilee Kelly 5 points for Nevada in the loss.

The Cubs recovered Jan. 12 with their win over Newton. They forced 29 turnovers and held Newton to 29.7% shooting from the field to overcome their own sluggish 29.6% shooting night.

Nevada used a strong second half to take down the Cardinals. The Cubs outscored Newton 28-18 over the final two quarters.

Bridget Cahill hit three 3-pointers and 12 points and four steals for Nevada in the win. Emma Strottman added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists, Nelson 8 points, seven rebounds and three steals, Reagan Davis 4 points and eight boards and Avery Hinson 4 points and three steals and assists apiece.

Nevada jumped out to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter and held on during its victory over PCM. Nevada held a 37-27 rebounding advantage and held the Mustangs to 26.7% shooting.

Strottman and Nelson both scored 11 points, Cinamon Hazlitt added 9 and Hinson 8 against PCM. Strottman also had seven rebounds, Nelson nine boards and two assists, Hazlitt two steals and Hinson five rebounds and two steals.

Cub boys break out of mini funk by blasting PCM

The Nevada boys basketball team had rough outings against ranked Clear Lake and Newton squads.

Turnovers killed the Cubs against a Clear Lake team ranked sixth in Class 3A. Both teams shot at a strong 50% clip from the field, but Nevada gave the ball up 26 times and only forced eight turnovers.

Clear Lake pulled away from Nevada late, outscoring the Cubs 20-6 in the fourth quarter.

Jacob Khounsourath had 22 points and four assists in a losing effort for Nevada. John Nelson added 14 points and five rebounds and Carson Rhodes 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals and blocks apiece.

Nevada endured a brutal second half in its loss to a Newton team ranked eighth in 3A. The Cubs only trailed by five at the half, but they were outscore 47-28 over the final two quarters.

Khounsourath had 11 points and four rebounds, Easton Gray 11 points and three boards, Rhodes 4 points, 10 rebounds and one block and Nelson 4 points, seven boards and two blocks against the Cardinals.

The Cub boys regrouped in a big way against PCM. They led 29-13 at the half and coasted to the decisive conference victory.

Nevada made 10 3-pointers, pulled down 11 offensive rebounds and held PCM to 33.3% shooting in the win. Khounsourath went for 20 points and four rebounds, Gray 12 points, Nelson 7 points and 6 boards and Rhodes 6 points and four rebounds.

Kyle Kingsbury added 6 points and four rebounds and assists apiece and Kane Williams 5 points and four rebounds against Newton.

Colo-NESCO boys recover nicely from Baxter loss

The Colo-NESCO boys basketball team wasn't able to stop a hot-shooting Baxter team in ISC South play.

Baxter shot 54.7% from the field. The Royals only shot 35.3% and they were outrebounded, 33-22.

Colo-NESCO trailed 33-22 at the half. Baxter increased its lead to 19 points by the end of the third quarter to put the game away.

Lucas Frohwein had 17 points and five rebounds and Breckin Clatt 8 points and four rebounds and assists apiece for the Royals in the loss. Spencer Hansen chipped in 7 points and four rebounds and Gannon Short 6 points and three boards.

Colo-NESCO snapped a four-game losing streak with its win over Colfax-Mingo. The Royals outscored the Tigerhawks 26-6 in the first quarter to put the game away early and they limited Colfax-Mingo to 25% shooting for the game and posted a 45-33 rebounding advantage.

Frohwein posted a double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds and he also dished out four assists. Clatt had 15 points, seven steals and four rebounds, Nathan McFarland 6 points and rebounds apiece, Hansen 6 points and four steals and Mark Bower 5 points and four assists.

The Royals jumped out to a big halftime lead and coasted in their non-conference victory over Melcher-Dallas. Colo-NESCO led 38-19 at the half courtesy of a big second quarter.

Colo-NESCO outrebounded Melcher-Dallas, 31-16. The Royals also forced 20 turnovers and made seven 3-pointers.

Frohwein had a huge night against the Saints. He went for 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists and steals apiece.

Hansen added 12 points, five assists and three steals, Short 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists and Drew Banks 10 points and three rebounds. McFarland tacked on 5 points and rebounds apiece.

Royal girls put up a fight against Melcher-Dallas

The Colo-NESCO girls basketball team was done in by turnovers and poor rebounding in its loss to Baxter.

The Royals turned the ball over 40 times and they were outrebounded, 37-22. They did a good job defensively in defeat, forcing 26 turnovers.

Free throws were also an issue. Colo-NESCO only got to the line three times, making two, compared to Baxter's 45 attempts and 19 makes.

Jessica Duran had 9 points and three steals and rebounds apiece for the Royals. Sydney Ingle added 6 points, five rebounds and three blocks and Gemma Bower scored 4 points off the bench.

Colo-NESCO hung tough in the second half during its loss to Melcher-Dallas. The Royals trailed 29-15 at the break, but they were only outscored 20-18 in the second half to keep within striking distance.

Colo-NESCO was outrebounded, 38-25, and had 28 turnovers. But the Royals held the Saints to 22.6% shooting from the field to keep the game from getting out of hand.

Jasmine Johannes had 10 points, Bower 7 points and five rebounds, Ingle 5 points and six boards and Mailey Short 5 points versus Melcher-Dallas.
