Nevada Journal sports round-up: Cubs upset 2A No. 3 North Polk in girls soccer

The Class 1A No. 4 Nevada girls soccer team pulled off a big 1-0 home victory over 2A No. 3 North Polk and the Colo-NESCO track teams hosted the Dave Robinson Relays at Cub Stadium in Nevada last week.

The Nevada girls soccer team defeated North Polk April 13 to rebound from its first loss of the season, a 2-1 setback to 3A program Southeast Polk April 10 at Pleasant Hill. The Cub girls also swept Council Bluffs Lincoln and Elkhorn South (Neb.) by respective 3-2 and 2-1 scores at the Border Battle Tournament in Council Bluffs Saturday to improve to 7-1 on the season.

The 2A No. 4 Nevada boys soccer team went to 7-2 on the season after pounding Prairie City-Monroe, 10-0, April 11 in Monroe, edging North Polk by a 1-0 score April 13 in Alleman and then splitting two games at the Border Battle Saturday. At Council Bluffs the Cub boys lost to Creighton Prep (Neb.), 4-0, and cruised to a 10-0 win over Council Bluffs Jefferson.

The Colo-NESCO boys track team placed sixth and the Royal girls eighth at the Dave Robinson Relays Friday with respective scores of 49 and 43. The Royals also participated in the Spartan Relays Aprill 11 in Maxwell, with the boys coming in fourth with 82 points and the girls sixth with 31.

The Nevada boys track team placed seventh at Norwalk with 44 points April 10 and the Cubs won two events and placed third in another during the Saydel Invitational April 13. Full results for the Saydel Invite were not available at press deadline.

The Cub girls track team placed eighth at both Norwalk April 10 and the East Marshall Girls Invitational April 13. Nevada scored 24 points and Norwalk and 44 at East Marshall.

The Nevada girls golf team won a home triangular with Saydel and PCM at the Indian Creek Country Club with a 9-hole score of 194 and the Cubs took second at the Gilbert Invitational Friday at the Ames Golf and Country Club with a 9-hole score of 178.

The Nevada boys golf team placed fifth at Bondurant-Farrar Invitational at the Terrace Hills Golf Course in Altoona April 10 with an 18-hole score of 332. They took 10th at the Pella Invitational Friday at the Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella after scoring a 328 over 18 holes.

The Nevada boys tennis team fell to Newton (9-2) and Pella (7-4) at the Newton Triangular April 11 in Newton. The Cubs won at South Hardin April 13, 6-0, to improve to 2-4 on the season.

The Cub girls tennis team suffered a 10-1 setback at North Polk April 10 in falling to 0-3 on the season. Results were not available at press deadline.

Here is what we learned from this week's Nevada and Colo-NESCO sports action.

Nevada girls soccer team bounces back with a vengeance

The Nevada girls soccer team certainly did not sit around and mope following its loss to Southeast Polk.

The Cubs came back from their first defeat with an impressive 1-0 victory over a North Polk team that is one of the elite programs in 2A.

Nevada played great defense led by sweeper Emma Strottman and keeper Joslynn Farmer, survivng 21 shots, including 10 on goal, to keep the Comets off the scoreboard. The Cub offense struggled to get good looks at the net during the game, but midway through the second half they made one count when forward Avery Anderson got off a sliding shot from just over 20 yards out that found the corner of the net for eventual winning score.

Nevada followed up its big win over North Polk by traveling to Council Bluffs and sweeping Council Bluffs Lincoln and Elkhorn South during the Border Battle.

The Cubs defeated Council Bluffs Lincoln in a shootout. Anderson and Reagan Davis each scored a goal in regulation and Davis, Maddie Gibson, Evelyn Anderson and Lynze Geerdes each converted a penalty kick during the shootout.

Farmer made four saves in the victory

Nevada scored 1 goal in each half during its victory over Elkhorn South. Anderson netted both Cub goals, Melanie Khounsourath and Kaleigh Groat each dished out an assist and Farmer made five saves.

In the loss to Southeast Polk the Cubs gave up two unanswered goals after leading 1-0 at the half. Belle Nelson scored Nevada's goal off an assist from Tori Meinecke and Farmer ended the game with seven saves.

Drew Robinson sparks Cub boys soccer team during busy week

Drew Robinson had a monster week on offense for the Nevada boys soccer team.

Robinson netted 6 goals and he dished out two assists during the victory over PCM. Edgar Cabrera had 1 goal and three assists, Owen Freeman, Dylan Fritz and Carson Rhodes 1 goal and assist apiece and Sam Betting four assists against the Mustangs.

Gavin Egeland scored Nevada's only goal against North Polk. Betting and Owen Freeman both assisted on the goal.

The Cub boys only got off two shots in the loss to Creighton Prep. Keeper Noah Mills made nine saves.

In the victory over Council Bluffs Jefferson Robinson exploded again, this time going for 5 goals and again added 2 assists. Betting had 1 goal and three assists and Egeland, Rhodes and Kaden Weber each scored once.

Cabrera dished out three assists, Aidan Freeman handed out two, Mills made two saves and Drake Hinson added one save.

Colo-NESCO girls win one event at the Dave Robinson Relays

The Colo-NESCO girls track team celebrated its home meet by earning one gold medal at the Dave Robison Relays.

The Royal girls took first in the sprint medley relay. The team of Hannah Matteson, Erynn Dulaney, Emma Lennie and Sophia Clawson ran a time of two minutes, three seconds flat to beat out Lynnville-Sully's 2:08.55 showing for first.

Those same four runners took third in the distance medley with a time of 4:54.10. Clawson added a silver medal in the 800 after running a 2:50.62 to trail the winning 2:48.27 time by Collins-Maxwell's Emma Pasquariello and she just beat out the third-place time of 2:50.63 by Coon Rapids-Bayard's Ella Heithoff.

The Royal boys earned two silver medals during the meet.

Breckin Clatt had a hand in both runner-up finishes for the Colo-NESCO boys. He ran a 59.03 in the 400 hurdles to take second to the 55.22 effort by Lynnville-Sully's James Gruver and joined up with Ganon Short, Jacke Angell and Lucas Frohwein to run a 3:44.56 in the 4X400 to take second to Baxter's 3:42.57.

Nathan McFarland was fourth in both the boys' high and long jump events with respective distances of 5-6 and 17-10.5. The Colo-NESCO boys' distance medley team of Mark Bower, Frohwein, Short and Clatt finished fourth in 4:00.61.

Royal boys win two field events at Spartan Relays

The Colo-NESCO boys track team earned two gold and silver medals apiece plus one bronze medal at the Spartan Relays.

Hunter Beard won the boys shot put and McFarland took first in the high jump and third in the long jump for the Royal boys.

Beard's best shot put toss was 44-3.25, which beat out the 39-2.5 distance by Collins-Maxwell's Luke Huntrods for first. McFarland jumped 5-8 in the boys' high jump to top West Marshall's Preston Reese by four inches for the title.

McFarland peaked with a jump of 18-6.5 in the long jump to come in behind the winning 19-11 jump by Collins-Maxwell's Dane Beattie and the runner-up distance of 18-10 by Martensdale St. Marys' Julian Huston.

The Colo-NESCO boys' distance medley and shuttle hurdle teams both came in second with respective times of 4:09.43 and 1:14.30.

The Royal girls saw their 4X100 team run a 56.45 to take second to BCLUW's 56.03 at the Spartan Relays.

Matteson placed fourth in the 100 with a 14.40 showing, Lennie ran a 1:11.11 in the open 400 to take fifth and Jessica Duran added a fifth-place throw of 28-1 in the girls' shot put. The Colo-NESCO girls' 4X200 team took fourth in 2:04.55 and their 4X800 and sprint medley teams each placed fifth with respective times of 13:45.94 and 2:28.89.

Nevada boys track team wins two events at Saydel

The Nevada boys track team won two events and added a bronze medal at the Saydel Invitational.

Carter Holland ran a 4:40.83 in the 1,600 for Nevada to beat out the 4:41.10 by Madrid's Clay Warson for first. The Cubs' Jacob Khounsourath jumped 6-2 in the high jump to outlast the 6-0 effort by Gilbert's Dillon Zanzwiger for a gold medal.

The Nevada boys 4X800 team finished third in 8:55.46, trailing Roland-Story's 8:39.02 and Gilbert's 8:39.85.

At Norwalk Khounsourath jumped 6-0.25 in the high jump to win over Carlisle's Mark Mast and North Polk's Shawn Wokittle, who both jumped 6-0. The Cub boys saw Nick Frideres take fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:06.19 and Holland placed fifth in the 3,200 with a 10:27.46 effort.

Cub girls record eight top-five performances at East Marshall

The Nevada girls placed in the top five eight times at East Marshall.

Ava Vanderheyden took third in the open 800 with a time of 2:39.18. Vanderheyden and Sophia Martinez were fourth and fifth in the 1,500 with respective times of 5:41.96 and 5:50.34.

Stefany Riera Ramones placed fourth in the open 100 after crossing the finish line in 14.03.

The Cub girls' 4X200 relay team placed fourth in 1:56.65. The 4X800 team was fifth in 11:28.26, the distance medley took fifth in 5:05.73 and the shuttle hurdle team also came in fifth at 1:15.25.

The Nevada girls also had two top-five performances at Norwalk. Complete results for the meet were not available at press deadline.

Vanderheyden placed fourth and Martinez fifth in the 800. Vanderheyden ran a 2:37.43 and Martinez a 2:38.52.

The Cub girls' 4X800 team placed fourth at Norwalk with a time of 11:16.95.

Cub girls golf team wins home triangular

The Nevada girls golf team won a home triangular over Prairie City-Monroe and Saydel with ease April 11 at the Indian Creek Country Club in Nevada.

The Cubs beat PCM by 31 strokes and Saydel by 48. Nevada's Bridget Cahill won medalist with a 46, Olivia Axmear was medalist runner-up with a 48 and Mary Hensley and Lauren Schmidt tied for third with identical rounds of 50.

Reagan Schmidt carded a 53 and Mya Spykerman a 55 to round out the Cub scoring.

Nevada couldn't keep up with 3A powerhouse Gilbert at the Gilbert Invitational, but the Cubs did get a strong individual outing from Axmear.

Axmear was medalist runner-up to last year's 3A individual second-place finisher Eden Lohrbach of Gilbert. Axmear shot a 39 over nine holes and Lohrbach's winning score was 35.

Cahill and Spykerman tied for ninth with identical rounds of 46 and Schmidt was 12th with a 47.

Kyle Kingsbury leads Nevada boys golf team in two meets

Kyle Kingsbury turned in two solid 18-hole outings for the Nevada boys golf team last week.

At the Bondurant-Farrar Invite Kingsbury tied North Polk's Jacob Eagan for seventh with a 77. Karter Beving, Easton Gray and Cole Beving each shot an 85 to tie for 21st.

Kingsbury tied for 11th at the Pella Invite with a score of 77. Karter Beving tied for 15th with a 79, Kole Beving tied for 38th with an 84 and Gray placed 53rd with an 88.

Nevada boys tennis team gets its first shutout

The Nevada boys tennis team earned the first shutout victory in program history with its win over South Hardin.

In singles play Rowan Steele won the No. 1 match over South Hardin's Landon Rewoldt by an 8-4 score, Rhett Harter and Ian Thomas scored identical 8-1 wins over Daniel Dolan and Sawyer Kane in the Nos. 2 and 3 matches respectively and Samuel Loux topped the Tigers Carter Zollar by an 8-3 score in the No. 4 match.

Steele and Harter defeated Rewoldt and Dolan by an 8-5 score in the No. 1 doubles match. Thomas and Loux coasted to an 8-2 win over Kane and Zollar in the No. 2 match.

During its loss to Pella Christian April 11 at Newton, Nevada earned two singles and doubles victories apiece.

Steele won a 9-7 battle over the Eagles' Shaun Bos in the No. 1 singles match and Loux edged Kirby Van Wyngarden by an 8-6 score in the No. 5 match. Braeden Moore and Jack Spence took the No. 4 doubles match by an 8-3 margin and Calvin Franzen and Connery Varsa cruised to an 8-2 win in the No. 5 match.

The Cubs earned two doubles wins during their setback to Newton.

Spence and Moore earned an 8-4 victory over Newton's Damien Smith and Stone Lillard in the No. 4 match. Calvin Franzen and Connery Varsa won the No. 5 match over River Meyer and Brady Swihart by an 8-6 decision.
