Nevada boys push No. 4 Norsemen to the limit

The Nevada boys basketball team came to play against Roland-Story Jan. 17.

After getting thumped in their first meeting with the Norsemen by a 79-56 score, the Cubs shot out to a 12-6 Tuesday. Roland-Story countered with a big run in the second quarter, but Nevada hung tough, only trailing 40-36 at the break. It looked as if Roland-Story was going to break the game open after its big run early in the fourth quarter, but Nevada refused to go away.

The Cubs cut the Norse lead from 13 down to five in the final seconds and that turned out to be their final margin of defeat.

"The key for us was sticking to the game plan," Nevada coach Tyler Struck said. "We obviously wanted to know where (Isaiah) Naylor and Jonovan (Wilkinson) were at all times and I thought we did a really good job with that. They had other guys make plays. But I give our guys a lot of credit because we kept answering the bell."

Nevada shot 45.5% from the field, made 12 of 31 3-pointers and 8 of 9 free throws. The Cubs lost the rebounding battle by a 37-31 margin, allowed the Norsemen to shoot 49.3% from the field and both teams had nine turnovers.

Jacob Khounsourath scored a game-high 26 points and added eight assists, five rebounds, two steals and one block for Nevada in a losing effort.

"Talking about guys that are special, Jacob showed it tonight," Struck said. "The first game (against Roland-Story) he settled for 3s and didn't want to get into the lane tonight, but he did that (attacked the lane) a ton tonight."

Alec White added 19 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

"Alec has had a rough year battling some injuries," Struck said. "Luckily tonight that didn't bother him at all. It was huge to have him back making plays."

Carson Rhodes chipped in 12 points, seven rebounds and one block, Easton Gray 9 points, Kyle Kingsbury 6 points and four rebounds and John Nelson 5 points and four boards. Wilkinson had 19 points and six rebounds, Naylor 15 points, Luke Patton 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Boaz Clark 14 points and five assists for Roland-Story.

Nevada's Avery Hinson beats Roland-Story's Elizabeth Ihle for a rebound during the first half of the Cubs' 50-39 loss to the Norse Jan. 17 in Story City.

Fast start doesn't hold up for Cub girls

The Nevada girls basketball team was unable to overcome an 18-0 Roland-Story run in the second quarter Jan. 17.

The Cub girls raced out to a 17-9 to start the game. Then the Norse went on their tear and Nevada couldn't recover.

"We got a little bit out of who we are," Nevada head coach Jordan Bentley said. "We just rushed some shots in that sequence. We don't want to play at that pace. We've got to know when to hit the breaks and keep doing what we're going and get good shots."

Nevada did hang around in the fourth quarter. The Cubs pulled within eight on a Reagan Davis basket in the final two minutes, but they couldn't make up any more ground.

"We haven't played a lot of man-to-main, but we held them to a five-point fourth quarter," Bentley said. "We kept hanging around and gave ourselves opportunities. We did a good job of staying in the game."

The Cub girls only shot 27.1% from the field and they had 19 turnovers. They held Roland-Story to 38.3% shooting, but gave up seven 3-pointers.

Emma Strottman had 10 points and three rebounds for Nevada. Isabelle Nelson added 4 points and 12 boards, Bridget Cahill 7 points, Avery Hinson and Cinamon Hazlitt 6 points apiece, Davis 4 points and three boards and Dakota Hendricks 2 points.

Colo-NESCO shot 47.7% from the field in the win. The Royals made 7 of 18 3-pointers and 7 of 14 free throws.
