Nevada Journal sports round-up: Nevada baseball wins three, C-N baseball splits at two tournaments

The Nevada baseball team ran its winning streak to five games last week with victories over Eagle Grove (8-7), Greene County (4-1) and Perry (9-1).

The Cub winning streak ended with doubleheader losses to Prairie City-Monroe Monday (16-6 and 9-5) as they fell to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

The Cub softball team dropped five in a row last week in going to 5-8 overall and 2-7 in the HOIC. Nevada fell to Saydel (10-0), Greene County (5-3) and Ames (12-0) and the Cubs were swept by Perry in a doubleheader (4-1 and 11-0).

The Colo-NESCO baseball team defeated Riceville (9-2) and fell to West Delaware (10-0) at the Waterloo Bucks Baseball Tournament June 8. The Royals also defeated Collins-Maxwell at home Friday (5-2), split two games at the Royal Invitational Saturday with a win over Iowa Valley (13-12) and a loss to Gladbrook-Reinbeck (14-6) and split two games with Baxter Monday (winning 19-1 and losing 8-6).

Colo-NESCO concluded Monday's doubleheader with Baxter at 7-7 overall and 5-3 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

The Royal softball team suffered four losses during the week. Colo-NESCO fell to West Marshall (4-0) June 7, suffered a sweep at the hands of Riceville June 8 (11-3 and 18-11) and came up short against No. 4 (Class 1A) Collins-Maxwell Friday (14-2).

Great pitching earns Nevada baseball team two HOIC wins

Great pitching lifted Nevada past Greene County June 8 and Perry Friday. Both games were at the Nevada Cubs Baseball Field at the SCORE Athletic Complex in Nevada.

Cael Franzen fired a two-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk in the victory over Greene County. Gavin Melohn doubled twice and picked up one run and RBI apiece, Colin Memmer tripled and drove in a run, Connor Schnettgoecke was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Ty Dittmer 1-for-2 with an RBI and Anthony Eaton 2-for-2.

Caleb Kooiker also scored two runs for Nevada against Greene County.

In the victory over Perry Memmer tossed a three-hitter with four strikeouts and walks apiece. Memmer also went 2-for-4 with a run at the plate.

Melohn was 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs and RBIs apiece, William Carsrud 2-for-2 with a double, run and RBI and Karter Beving 2-for-3 with two runs and RBIs apiece in the victory. Franzen added a single and an RBI and James Edwards drove in a run.

Nevada jumped out to a 7-1 lead and held on in its victory over Eagle Grove June 7 at Eagle Grove. Eagle Grove rallied to tie the score, but Nevada plated the winning run in the top of the seventh.

Carsrud went 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI, Memmer and Franzen were both 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Memmer also scored twice and Beving homered and drove in two runs. Eaton finished 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Melohn and Christian Hawbaker both singled and scored and Schnettgoecke picked up an RBI.

Beving was the winning pitcher after giving up two unearned runs with five strikeouts in two innings.

In the 16-6 loss to PCM Nevada was outscored 11-0 over the last three innings. Memmer was 1-for-2 with two runs and RBIs apiece, William Carsrud finished 2-for-3 with a run, Hawbaker was 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Kooiker and Schnettgoecke both singled and scored and Franzen was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Edwards took the loss. He gave up five runs — just one earned — on five hits in two innings.

In the 9-5 loss to PCM the Cubs gave up five unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Franzen took the loss after allowing nine runs — three earned — on eight hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Cub softball team struggles on offense

The Nevada softball team never could get its bats going during the week.

Nevada went without a hit in the losses to Saydel and Ames. Saydel pitcher Dakota Lake had 15 strikeouts and Ames hurler Alexa Kopaska five strikeouts.

Makyla Spaid took the loss for Nevada in both games. Spaid gave up seven earned runs on nine hits and five walks with one strikeout in 4 1/3 innings against Saydel and she allowed 12 earned runs on 14 hits with one walk in two innings against Ames.

The Cubs did find some offensive success in the loss to Greene County. Lani Khounsourath singled and scored, Briar Crain walked and scored, Jessica Myers scored one run and Avery Hinson and Peyton Hanson each picked up a single.

Samantha Herridge was the losing pitcher against Greene County. Herridge surrendered five earned runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings.

Statistics from the Perry doubleheader were not available at press deadline.

Royals get bats rolling against Baxter, Iowa Valley

The Colo-NESCO baseball team exploded on offense in its victories over Iowa Valley and Baxter.

Andrew Grover was 2-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs, Ephram Muntz scored and drove in three runs apiece, Spencer Hansen doubled twice and drove in a run and Alex Rouse was 1-for-2 with three runs and RBI for the Royals against Baxter. Ben Rouse went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, Drew Banks 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Kenny Cutler walked twice and scored three times.

Hansen got the win after giving up one run on four hits and seven walks with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

In the 8-6 loss to Baxter Cutler, Grover, Hansen and Kaleb Gray each picked up two hits. Cutler scored one run, Grover doubled and scored three times, Hansen crossed the plate once and Gray doubled and drove in a run.

Lucas Frohwein was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Banks 1-for-3 with an RBI in the loss. Banks was the losing pitcher for Colo-NESCO.

The Royals tallied 11 hits in the victory over Iowa Valley at their home tournament Saturday. Eight different players picked up a hit, with Grover going 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs and two RBIs, Banks finishing 2-for-5 with two runs and Hansen going 2-for-6 with a run.

Alex Rouse picked up the win over Iowa Valley after allowing one run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings.

In the loss to Gladbrook-Reinbeck Cutler went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, Hansen 2-for-3 with a double and one run and RBI apiece, Gray 1-for-4 with two RBIs, Banks 1-for-3 with an RBI and Grover 1-for-2 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Grover took the loss after giving up five earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and five walks in four innings.

Hansen gave up one run on one hit and two walks with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings to get the victory over Baxter Friday.

Ben Rouse was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Banks 1-for-3 with an RBI, Grover 1-for-3 with a double and a run and Cutler picked up an RBI. Hansen also singled and scored and Muntz crossed the plate once.

In the victory over Riceville at Waterloo June 8 Frohwein tripled and picked up one run and RBI apiece, Hansen went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, Cutler 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Banks 2-for-4 with a run. Muntz was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.

Banks was the winning pitcher against Riceville after surrendering two hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

A Ben Rouse single accounted for Colo-NESCO's only hit in the loss to West Delaware. Clay Gilmore gave up two earned runs on five walks and a strikeout in 2/3 innings as the losing pitcher.

C-N softball team struggles with consistency

The Colo-NESCO softball team struggled offensively in its losses to West Marshall and sputtered defensively in the two setbacks to Riceville. The Royals had a tough time in both phases against Collins-Maxwell.

In the loss to West Marshall Callie Kohlwes, Riley Handsaker, Jenna Hill and Molly Angell each had one hit. Kohlwes took the loss after allowing two earned runs on five hits and walks apiece with four strikeouts.

Taylor Cox doubled, homered and drove in a run, Abigail Hostetler was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, Kohlwes finished 2-for-4, Angell singled and scored, Handsaker picked up a hit and Izabell Voelker scored once in the 11-3 loss to Riceville. Kohlwes took the loss after giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and one walk in four innings.

In the 18-11 loss to Riceville Kohlwes went 2-for-5 with two runs and RBIs apiece, Handsaker doubled, scored twice and drove in a run, Rylee Upchurch was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Hill knocked in a run. Cerra Muntz was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, Voelker and Angell both singled once and scored twice and Annabelle Heller doubled and knocked in two runs.

Annabelle Nessa took the loss after surrendering 16 earned runs and finishing with four strikeouts and walks apiece.

In the loss to Collins-Maxwell Cox doubled and Handsaker and Katherine Rouse each singled once. Hill and Muntz each scored one run.

Nessa took the loss against the Spartans after giving up four earned runs on four hits and two walks in two innings.
