Nevada Journal sports round-up: Olivia Axmear places 14th at 3A girls state golf meet

Nevada sophomore Olivia Axmear turned in a strong showing during her first trip to the Class 3A girls state golf meet as an individual last Thursday and Friday at the River Valley Golf Course in Adel.

The Nevada softball team won its season opener over Roland-Story by a 7-4 score Friday at Roland. The Nevada baseball team was swept by the Norse, 7-1 and 13-3, in a Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader Friday at Story City and the Cubs defeated Perry by a 6-2 score May 23 at Perry.

The Cub baseball team concluded the week with a 2-4 overall record and 1-2 HOIC mark.

The Colo-NESCO baseball team defeated Collins-Maxwell by a 6-4 score Friday to improve to 1-3 overall and get off to a 1-0 start in the Iowa Star Conference South Division. The Royal softball team put up a good fight in its opener against No. 5 (1A) Collins-Maxwell Friday before falling by a 3-0 score at Collins.

The loss to Collins-Maxwell put the Royal softball team at 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the ISC South. Colo-NESCO also fell to GMG (6-3), English Valleys (11-1) and Wapello (12-0) during its opening week.

Olivia Axmear ties for 14th in 3A at girls state golf

Axmear had a strong showing in her first solo state tournament appearance during the 3A meet in Adel.

Axmear tied for 14th with a 175 over 36 holes. She shot an 89 Thursday and cut three strokes off that score Friday.

"It was so fun," Axmear said. "It was way different than any other meet because so many people watching me and cheering me on. The greens were rough, but everything else was good."

Newton's Rylee Heryford won the 3A individual title after winning a three-hole playoff against defending champion Eden Lohrbach of Gilbert. Both golfers shot a 149 over the two days.

Clear Lake won the 3A girls team title with a score of 713. Gilbert was second with a 716.

Cub softball team uses strong start to down Norse

The Nevada softball team built a 5-0 lead through 4 innings and coasted to victory over Roland-Story.

Samantha Herridge gave up 3 earned runs on 8 hits with 2 strikeouts and walks apiece going all 7 innings to get the win for Nevada. Peyton Hanson doubled, homered and drove in 2 runs and Makayla Spaid went 2-for-3 with a double, run an RBI apiece for the Cubs on offense.

Lani Khounsourath doubled and scored twice, Weig doubled and scored 1 run, Katelyn Khounsourath doubled once and Jessica Myers was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Cubs.

Nevada no match for Norse in baseball doubleheader

Nevada didn't have the horses to keep up with Roland-Story in the HOIC doubleheader between the two teams.

In the first game Nevada fell behind 4-0 and scored its only run in the fourth inning. Gavin Melohn doubled and scored, Connor Schnettgoecke was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Christian Hawbaker singled once and Cael Franzen was the losing pitcher after allowing 4 earned runs on 9 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in 5 2/3 innings.

The nightcap saw Nevada fall behind 6-0 and never recover. Karter Beving was 2-for-2 with a double, run and RBI, Melohn singled and scored and Hawbaker also crossed the plate once.

Colin Memmer took the loss on the second game after surrendering 4 earned runs on 2 hits and 5 walks with 5 strikeouts in 3 innings.

Nevada scored 3 runs in both the first and seventh innings during its victory over Perry. Schnettgoecke was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs, Beving doubled, scored twice and drove in a run, Franzen went 1-for-2 with 2 runs, Sam Hanson doubled and drove in a run, William Carsrud doubled once and Franzen singled, walked twice and scored 2 times.

Carsrud got the win against Perry after allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits with 1 strikeout and 6 walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Colo-NESCO baseball team gets first win

Colo-NESCO picked up its first win on the baseball diamond with its victory over Collins-Maxwell.

Andrew Grover was 2-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBIs against the Spartans. Kaleb Gray went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and Lucas Frohwein and Ben Rouse both went 1-for-3 with 1 run and RBI apiece and Kenny Cutler doubled and drove in a run.

Spencer Hansen was the winning pitcher after giving up 3 earned runs on 6 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

The Royals suffered a 5-3 loss at Madrid May 26. Gray singled and drove in 2 runs, Grover singled and scored, Cutler walked and scored, Trenton Beard drew 2 free passes and scored once and Rouse was the losing pitcher after giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk in 3 1/3 innings.

Royal softball team struggles offensively

Callie Kohlwes pitched a strong game to keep Colo-NESCO close against Collins-Maxwell in its softball opener, but the Royals only had 4 hits off Spartan pitcher Erica Houge.

Kohlwes allowed 3 earned runs on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts and one walk going all six innings. She also singled on offense and Abigail Hostetler was 2-for-3 with a double.

During Saturday's tournament at Williamsburg Kohlwes took the loss against English Valleys despite giving up just 3 earned runs on 6 hits and 3 walks with 2 strikeouts in 6 innings. Taylor Cox Drove in Hostetler for the only Royal run and Kohlwes, Riley Handsaker and Annabelle Nessa each singled once.

In the loss to Wapello Nessa allowed 8 earned runs on 15 hits with 3 strikeouts and 7 walks in 3 2/3 innings as the losing pitcher. The Royals went without a hit against Wapello's Ada Boysen.

Colo-NESCO opened the season with a 6-3 loss to GMG May 23 at Garwin.

Hostetler was 1-for-4 with an RBI, Kohlwes 1-for-4 with a run, Izabell Voelker 2-for-4 and Nessa 1-for-3 with a double. Nessa took the loss after allowing 6 runs — just 1 earned — on 5 hits and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
