The Nevada boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker at home against Roland-Story by a 44-42 score Jan. 18, but they came back with a thrilling 50-47 victory over Grinnell Friday at Nevada.

The Cub boys moved their overall record to 9-4 after the Grinnell game and they fell to 6-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference after the Roland-Story loss.

The Nevada girls thumped Prairie City-Monroe at home, 45-24, Jan. 17 and put up a good fight in a 44-30 loss to No. 10 (Class 3A) Roland-Story Jan. 18 in Nevada. The Cub girls also suffered a 57-27 loss to No. 6 (4A) Grinnell Friday.

The loss to Grinnell put the Nevada girls at 9-7 on the season. After splitting with PCM and Roland-Story the Cubs went to 6-3 in the HOIC.

The Colo-NESCO boys trounced Valley Lutheran Jan. 17, 54-33, and suffered a 69-51 loss at the hands of North Tama Friday. The split put the Royal boys at 10-4 overall and 7-3 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

The Colo-NESCO girls pummeled Valley Lutheran Jan. 17, 58-30. The Royal girls fell to Meskwaki Jan. 18, 68-28, and North Tama Friday, 44-27.

The loss to North Tama put the Royal girls at 4-12 overall and 2-8 in the ISC South.

The Nevada wrestling team also had an individual place second at the IWCOA girls state wrestling tournament last weekend and crowned two individual HOIC champions at the conference meet in Nevada Friday.

Here are 10 standout performers from this week's competition:

Mackenzie Arends

Arends was an absolute powerhouse for Nevada at 190 during the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials (IWCOA) girls state wrestling tournament held last Friday and Saturday at the at the Xtream Arena in Coralville.

She went 4-1 with two pins before falling to West Lyon's Jana Terwee by tiebreaker in the championship match in a 3-2 decision.

Arends opened the tournament with a 9-0 major decision over Spencer's Kaylee Nachtigal. She followed that win by pinning Saint Ansgar's Kloey Dowse and AHSTW's Isabelle Canada to reach the semifinals.

In the semifinals Ahrends pulled off a 3-2 thriller over Eddy to set up the championship match.

Kaden Weber

Weber improved to 26-0 at 106 pounds for the Nevada wrestling team by winning a HOIC individual championship Friday.

Weber pinned Perry's Aidan Carlson and Roland-Story's Levi Webb to reach the finals, where he beat West Marshall's Shane Hanford by a 7-2 decision.

Camdan Vincent

After placing second at the last two HOIC meets Vincent finally won a conference title in his senior year for Nevada.

Vincent claimed the HOIC championship at 285. He received a bye in the quarterfinals then pinned South Hamilton's Austin Busch and Roland-Story's Colin Hansen to claim the title and improve to 14-5.

Maddie Dunham

Dunham averaged 7.0 points and 6.7 rebounds for the Nevada girls basketball team over its three games last week.

Dunham had 7 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist in the win over PCM. She recorded 8 points, 8 rebounds and 1 assist against Roland-Story and 6 points and 7 rebounds against Grinnell.

Carson Rhodes

Carson Rhodes took full advantage of his 6-7 frame to be a force in the middle for the Nevada boys basketball team against Roland-Story and Grinnell.

Rhodes had 11 points and an amazing 17 rebounds against Roland-Story. He also blocked 5 shots against the Norsemen.

In the victory over Grinnell he finished with 6 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Edwards also averaged 13.5 points for the Nevada boys against Roland-Story and Grinnell.

Edwards tallied 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals against Roland-Story. He finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and one assist against Grinnell.

Andrew Tschantz

Tschantz averaged 19.0 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Colo-NESCO boys basketball team against North Tama and Valley Lutheran.

Tschantz went for 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals against North Tama. He had 23 points and 5 rebounds in the victory over Valley Lutheran.

Nolan Smith

Smith was tough in the post for the Colo-NESCO boys against North Tama and Valley Lutheran. He averaged a double-double at 13 points and 10 rebounds over the two games.

Smith tallied 12 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal against North Tama. He had 14 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals against Valley Lutheran.

Lucas Frohwein

Frohwein went for 15 points in both games for the Colo-NESCO boys.

Frohwein finished with 15 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block against North Tama. He had 15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals and one assist versus Valley Lutheran.

Izabelle Voelker averaged 14.7 points and 4.7 steals for the Colo-NESCO girls basketball team in its games against Valley Lutheran, Meskwaki and North Tama.

Voelker went for a career-high 28 points on 12 of 25 shooting in the victory over Valley Lutheran. She also had 6 steals and 4 rebounds against the Crusaders.

Voelker had 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals against Meskwaki. She finished with 9 points, 6 steals, 3 rebounds and 1 assist versus North Tama.
