Nevada secretary of state reviews MedMen donation allegations

The office of Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske is reviewing allegations that the co-founder of MedMen made illegal campaign contributions to Gov. Steve Sisolak, after POLITICO reported on the claims.

Wayne Thorley, deputy secretary of state for elections, confirmed to The Associated Press that the office was reviewing the allegations detailed in a lawsuit against the company by its former CFO James Parker. A spokesperson for the secretary of state's office could not immediately be reached for comment.

Those allegations came to the office’s attention after POLITICO published a story on the struggles of the once-promising cannabis company. Representatives for Sisolak did not respond to requests for comment, and MedMen declined to comment for the story.

On Tuesday, the Nevada GOP called for an investigation into the allegations.

Cegavske is a Republican who served in the state Legislature for nearly two decades.

The complaint alleges that MedMen co-founder Adam Bierman maxed out donations to a Nevada candidate and compelled other executives at the company to make the additional contributions that he had promised to the candidate. Parker alleges that Bierman purchased furniture for co-founder Andrew Modlin to offset “a sizable donation.”

The only Nevada candidate who received maximum donations from the three executives is Sisolak.

MedMen has denied the allegations and filed a countersuit against Parker.
