‘We can never be complacent.’ Herald photographer, ‘Endangered’ star to host conversation at FIU

Journalism is under attack.

In Russia. In Mexico. And, most notably, in the United States of America.

This impending threat inspired the documentary “Endangered,” which follows four journalists across three countries — Mexico, Brazil and the USA — as they seek to achieve their mission: hold powerful people accountable. Among the four journalists, the Miami Herald’s own photographer Carl Juste was selected to participate.

“As present-day journalists, we can never be complacent,” Juste told the Miami Herald. “Especially now, journalism is under attack. The attack is coming from multiple sides. It’s coming from fiscal instability, political oppression, the digital space via AI but also the community, because if the communities are not valuing our work, we’ll be extinct. ‘Endangered’ really foreshadows what can happen if we’re not vigilant.”

The documentary, which premiered in April of 2022 on HBO Max, will be screened at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay campus as part of an event funded in part by Florida Humanities. A conversation with Juste and the film’s co-director Rachel Grady will follow.
