Video Transcript

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: Hi. I'm Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.

DARREN BARNET: My name is Darren Barnet.

RAMONA YOUNG: Ramona Young.

MEGAN SURI: Megan Suri.

LEE RODRIGUEZ: Lee Rodriguez.

JAREN LEWISON: I'm Jaren Lewison. We're the cast of "Never Have I Ever". And today, we are doing the Wired Autocomplete Interview.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

DARREN BARNET: My stomach just dropped. I don't know why.

RAMONA YOUNG: I know. It's scary. I've always wanted to do this.

MEGAN SURI: Who does Jaren Lewison look like?

JAREN LEWISON: I don't know. I feel like this is a cast question. Guys, who do I look like?

MEGAN SURI: You kind of almost look like a little bit of John Krasinski kind of.

JAREN LEWISON: I will super take that.

MEGAN SURI: There's a little bit of a resemblance.

DARREN BARNET: Yeah.

JAREN LEWISON: That's a compliment I will for sure take. When I was younger, I used to get Elijah Wood. That's who I used to get when I was younger. It's John Krasinski and Elijah Wood had a kid.

JAREN LEWISON: OK.

DARREN BARNET: All right.

MEGAN SURI: Jaren Lewison, "Barney and Friends".

JAREN LEWISON: Yes of course. If you're a really good internet sleuth, you can find my Barney episodes, which was the first thing I ever did as an actor when I was like seven or eight years old. You can find them on YouTube. I know Maitreyi's seen them because I exposed myself.

RAMONA YOUNG: Pretty sure we've all seen them.

JAREN LEWISON: Oh everybody's-- OK.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: It brings me joy.

JAREN LEWISON: I had very large hair. I had no teeth. Yeah. It's a trip.

DARREN BARNET: Aw.

MEGAN SURI: Jaren Lewison movies.

JAREN LEWISON: Yeah. I've got "Tag", I've got "Men, Women, & Children", I've got a couple. I want to keep doing more.

RAMONA YOUNG: You were in tag?

JAREN LEWISON: Yeah. I played a teen version of Ed Helms's character, Hoagie.

DARREN BARNET: Yes.

RAMONA YOUNG: Ah that's amazing.

JAREN LEWISON: I didn't get to meet him but I saw him while I was doing a fitting. But I was too nervous to go say anything.

RAMONA YOUNG: Where does Maitreyi Ramakrishnan go to school?

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: Shout out Meadowvale, Meadowvale gang. But technically, I haven't enrolled in university. I got to always, say it. [INAUDIBLE]

RAMONA YOUNG: You say that every time.

DARREN BARNET: She gives them love every time.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: I have to shout out the Meadowvale homies. The only reason I'm here is because of good old public education. OK? So let me have that.

RAMONA YOUNG: Does Maitreyi Ramakrishnan play harp?

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: OK, so I didn't play harp prior to Devi, but I did take a lot of harp lessons. So during Monday to Friday every day, that would be filming. And then on my Saturday would be harp lesson day. And that would be two hours at the harp trying to make sure it looked super authentic when I was playing, and then also out of my own curiosity. So if you gave me a harp-- I'm not the one playing the song though. Let's get that clear. I'm not that advanced. I will play you some simple nice stuff. But--

JAREN LEWINSON: Oh I've heard you play a little bit for real. And you're better than you're making it out to be. She's very musical, everyone.

RAMONA YOUNG: You're a master at piano.

JAREN LEWISON: And she can sing.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: OK. OK, OK, OK. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

JAREN LEWISON: Violin's there too.

RAMONA YOUNG: Does Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, oh, oh, this one's a tricky one, speaking Tamil?

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: I'm assuming it's asking if I do speak Tamil. I don't speak Tamil fluently. I actually only really understand it because everyone in my household does speak Tamil. And I've always been surrounded by Tamil. I personally do not speak Tamil, but I could say, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] the typical kind of stuff. But yeah. I like to know the survival words like water, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] AKA, food because that's what matters.

RAMONA YOUNG: This is movie.

JAREN LEWISON: What movie does Darren Barnet play in?

DARREN BARNET: I did a Lifetime movie forever ago called "Instakiller". I'm currently working on a movie called "Apophenia". It's a psycho thriller. Very excited about that. That will be within the next two years probably that that will be coming out.

RAMONA YOUNG: My question is, are you the psycho in it? And are you allowed to say?

DARREN BARNET: I am a complete nutcase in it.

[INTERPOSING VOICES]

MEGAN SURI: So you're just yourself.

DARREN BARNET: Yeah.

RAMONA YOUNG: [INAUDIBLE] Wow. Megan.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: Damn, Megan. Let's go.

JAREN LEWISON: What is Darren Barnet's Snapchat?

RAMONA YOUNG: Dang.

MEGAN SURI: Damn.

JAREN LEWISON: They want to add you, Darren.

DARREN BARNET: I don't ever use it or check it but I think it's Truth or Darren. I thought that was

[INTERPOSING VOICES]

MEGAN SURI: It's so bad, it's good.

JAREN LEWISON: What episode of "Criminal Minds" was Darren Barnet in?

DARREN BARNET: It's episode 20 of-- no, it's season 13 episode 20 I think. It's called Unforgettable. It was fun.

JAREN LEWISON: It's kind of ironic. You realize that.

DARREN BARNET: Yeah.

JAREN LEWISON: You'd figure, so one of those, 2013 or 1,320. So--

DARREN BARNET: Something like that. The episode's titled, Unforgettable.

JAREN LEWISON: Paxton, "Never Have I Ever"

RAMONA YOUNG: Whoa.

JAREN LEWISON: Shirt scene.

DARREN BARNET: Yeah. That, so originally our director wanted me to take my shirt off from behind with one hand and rip it off. But I kept literally like choking myself trying to do it. So I decided to do it this way where I spin it off with the arm. They had me in a size small to figure flatter myself. I needed them to give me a bigger size shirt to rip it off easier. But I got that second take I believe. And also a lot of people ask if it was sped up, was not sped up.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: I will vouch. I will vouch. It was second take.

JAREN LEWISON: Who does Paxton blank in "Never Have I Ever". Date.

DARREN BARNET: That you are going to have to find out in season two of "Never Have I Ever".

JAREN LEWISON: What blank is Paxton in "Never Have I Ever"? Grade.

DARREN BARNET: Paxton is a Junior at Sherman Oaks High.

JAREN LEWISON: "Never Have I Ever", does Demi, Devi, end up with Paxton?

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: So it's not Demi Lovato?

JAREN LEWISON: I don't think so. I don't think she's in our show unless there's a spoiler.

DARREN BARNET: For that, you're going to have to watch season two of "Never Have I Ever".

RAMONA YOUNG: You'll find out soon.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: When did Megan Suri start acting?

MEGAN SURI: Professionally since I was eight years old. Oh, my first role was actually a Honda commercial with my dad. Never aired, but nevertheless free food, first experience of crafting. Great. It was great, man. I was with it.

MEGAN SURI: That's wholesome. That's so wholesome, With your dad, too?

MEGAN SURI: Super wholesome. Super wholesome.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: Who is Aneesa, "Never Have I Ever"?

MEGAN SURI: Aneesa is a 16-year-old transfer student from a private school who goes to Sherman Oaks. And I play her.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: Megan Suri "13 Reasons Why".

MEGAN SURI: So OK, let's get into it. My scene got cut. And I'm over it. OK? I'm over it. I'm totally over it. Not at all mad. No, I genuinely am actually not. It was such a cool experience. They sent a car to my house to pick me up to take me to the airport. And there was a guy in a suit holding his phone like this with my name on it when I got-- it was crazy. That was the first time in a long time where I was like, I'm an actor? What? It was crazy. So great experience, just didn't air.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: Who did Megan Suri play in "Valentine's Day"?

MEGAN SURI: I played a character named Rani. And that was, it was life changing. I got to work with so many actors that I grew up watching. It was super surreal. Couldn't have been luckier for my first job. Insane. I think I was nine years old perhaps. Yeah, nine years old. I think it came out in 2010. So I was, yeah. Nine years old.

RAMONA YOUNG: Is that the movie Taylor Swift is in?

MEGAN SURI: Yeah, dude. Yeah. Don't watch it, though. Please. I'm trying to-- so prepubescent.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: I'm going to go watch it. You know that, right?

[INTERPOSING VOICES]

MEGAN SURI: That was a typo. That question's not real. I want Ramona to rip off her own questions.

RAMONA YOUNG: Wow, rude. OK. I'm scared.

DARREN BARNET: Ramona Young, "13 Reasons Why".

RAMONA YOUNG: My scene was cut. No, I'm just kidding.

[INTERPOSING VOICES]

MEGAN SURI: I was about to say.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: That is not a thing.

RAMONA YOUNG: I have never seen "13 Reasons". I've auditioned I think for one of the seasons. And probably like every other young adult actor in LA.

DARREN BARNET: When Ramona Young singer?

RAMONA YOUNG: Back in 1984, I worked at a jazz club as a singer. When Ramona Young singer? What does that mean?

LEE RODRIGUEZ: It means you're a singer.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: Well--

JAREN LEWISON: When did you start singing, Ramona?

RAMONA YOUNG: Never professionally. So I sing for fun.

JAREN LEWISON: Maybe they're telling the future and that you're going to be a singer.

RAMONA YOUNG: Maybe. Maybe. Maybe I should start a band.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: But let the record show, Ramona is a very, very talented singer, very talented, great voice.

DARREN BARNET: She kills it.

RAMONA YOUNG: Thank you.

DARREN BARNET: Instagram.

RAMONA YOUNG: Follow me Ramona Bish Young.

DARREN BARNET: Ramona Bish Young.

RAMONA YOUNG: Ramona, Bish. That's how you say it.

DARREN BARNET: I like it.

MEGAN SURI: How tall is Lee Rodriguez?

LEE RODRIGUEZ: I recently found out that I am not 5'9". I am 5'8" and 1/2. And I've been saying that I'm 5'9" this whole time. It's a shock. I think I'm just going to keep saying I'm 5'9". So the answer is 5'9".

RAMONA YOUNG: And you've been telling people on set that you were 5'10" and that you've been growing.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: Exactly.

LEE RODRIGUEZ: I thought, I really thought I was.

MEGAN SURI: Where is Lee Rodriguez right now?

LEE RODRIGUEZ: I am in my publicist's office.

RAMONA YOUNG: Fair enough.

DARREN BARNET: That's a nice wall behind you.

JAREN LEWISON: Nice wall.

MEGAN SURI: Is Lee Rodriguez married?

LEE RODRIGUEZ: No, I'm not married.

RAMONA YOUNG: All right. Straight forward. [INAUDIBLE]

MEGAN SURI: What has Lea Rodriguez been in?

LEE RODRIGUEZ: I've been in "Grown-ish" and, [INAUDIBLE] this Snapchat show called "A Class of Lies" and "Never Have I Ever".

MEGAN SURI: How old is Lee Rodriguez?

LEE RODRIGUEZ: I am 21.

RAMONA YOUNG: What, oh, I believe that says grade. What grade is Devi in "Never Have I Ever"?

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: She's in grade 10. Sorry, sophomore. She's a sophomore in 10th grade. I say grade 10. It just makes sense.

RAMONA YOUNG: Hey, that makes sense to me. What happened, oh shoot. What happened to Devi? What happened to Devi in "Never Have I Ever"? That's a general question.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: There's a lot. There's a lot that happens. Her dad dies, first 15 minutes straight out the gate. Real sad. Heart attack. Not fun. She finds love. She's got great best friends. Her cousin moves in. Sort of weird. But maybe they get along. Her mom can be a lot. A lot happens to Devi.

RAMONA YOUNG: What episode of "Never Have I Ever" do Devi and Ben kiss?

JAREN LEWISON: Oh that was a bit of a sneak.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: I'm so sorry for those who haven't watched the show at all. If you haven't, interesting choice that you're watching this video of all of us here. But for those of you guys who have, yeah, last episode, Malibu, probably the last five minutes there. Yeah.

RAMONA YOUNG: Steamy. Great scene.

MEGAN SURI: I have a question to follow up with that that just comes out of my own curiosity. How many takes did you guys do for that?

JAREN LEWISON: A lot. Yeah.

RAMONA YOUNG: Wow.

JAREN LEWISON: I think that it's just like, because it's all different angles and different setups. And then there was that drone shot where it peels out overlooking Malibu. So we were kissing during that too because it starts out on us. And so a lot is the answer. And then--

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: It's not even just in Malibu. Then you have to film it on a stage with screens.

JAREN LEWISON: For the actual scene. So a lot.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: There's your Googled question.

MEGAN SURI: Good to know. You're welcome, fans.

RAMONA YOUNG: That's a good question, Megan.

DARREN BARNET: That was nerve wracking, awesome, and I think I need to go pass out now.

MAITREYI RAMAKRISHNAN: Damn, OK. I thought it was pretty fun. Yeah.

JAREN LEWISON: I enjoyed that.

RAMONA YOUNG: Thank you for watching the Wired Autocomplete Interview. Remember to check out "Never Have I Ever" on Netflix July 15.
