While her Never Have I Ever character is caught in a love triangle, actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is happy being single and open to love.

In a new interview with Laverne Cox on her E! talk show If We’re Being Honest, Ramakrishnan opened up about her real-life love life, saying that gender isn’t what’s important to her, but personality.

On Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, Ramakrishnan plays Devi, a boy-crazy high school girl who has been caught up in a love triangle with boys Paxton and Ben, and then even more drama with another boy Des. However, in reality, Ramakrishnan says it’s not just boys she looks at when she’s dating.

"I'm very much so a personality person," she told Cox. "If you get that banter with me, you can read my face perfectly, I don't care if you're a boy, girl or in between. You are my person, and you are just the package that that person comes in. I'm very much about the personality and I don't really do labels for attraction."

Ramakrishnan, who is 20, is nominated for Female TV Star and Comedy TV Star of 2022 at this year’s People’s Choice Awards for playing Devi in the show, which is loosely inspired by creator Mindy Kaling’s teen years.

She also emphasized that while her character is busy trying to get in a relationship, she's most happy just being herself.

"The other day, I said to Mindy, 'I think I'm just more of a badass when I'm single,'" she said. "Right now in my life, I am so happy just doing me and being there for myself."

If We’re Being Honest, hosted by Laverne Cox, airs Wednesdays at 10pm on E!
