Never heard of Carversville? Here's some good news, even if you don't live there

Not much news comes out of tiny Carversville, so here's the latest and it's good news: the tiny post office at the center of the historic Bucks County village in Solebury Township will stay open.

While the local postmaster declined to comment, a source with knowledge of the facts, but shy about being quoted, said the notice arrived shortly after New Year's that the post office, a former carriage shed on Fleecydale Road, would close this winter.

"The first anyone heard about it was that (the post office) would close at the end of January, beginning of February, because they needed a signed lease," said the source.

"People were upset. It was such short notice," they said. "Everyone would have had to go to Point Pleasant, which is four and a half miles away. Some (in Carversville) have been getting mail here 50 years. The'd have to change their address."

The U.S. Postal Service wanted a new lease, and were planning to leave if it didn't get one.

Apparently, there's an agreement for five years. Daniel Stern, who owns the building in which the post office is located, declined to comment on specifics about the future of the building, which includes a space for a small deli/restaurant. However, he said he's optimistic about the future with a new tenant who is considering moving into to the place. A public announcement is expected in April.

Finding another space for a Carversville post office, with its 200 mailboxes, would nearly be impossible, too, since the mail is available usually by 10:30 a.m. and there's nothing available with a parking lot to handle the rush.

While some people get home mail delivery in Carversville, it's not all that easy for newcomers to Carversville to get a box.

Said the source: "It's kind of special for people today to still have to come to the post office to collect their mail, so there's a waiting list to get a post office box."
