New Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy 'definitely' thinks Dak Prescott can be a Super Bowl QB
Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy isn’t cutting the check to quarterback Dak Prescott, but he clearly is looking forward to the day that happens.
McCarthy worked with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers and Joe Montana as an assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs. He knows good quarterback play. All three of those quarterbacks have won Super Bowls.
And he says Prescott, currently at the end of his rookie contract, can win one too.
Dak Prescott can ‘definitely’ win a championship
McCarthy’s thoughts on Prescott are awkward considering Prescott and the Cowboys are still battling over a new contract. But it’s not like Dallas is letting Prescott walk.
Assuming Prescott gets signed, whether it takes the franchise tag or not, McCarthy thinks Dallas can win a championship with Prescott leading the way.
“I think number one, you just look at what he's done during his time in the league. I think he's been impressive,” McCarthy said from the NFL scouting combine, according to the team’s website. “I've been impressed with him since the first time I saw him play live up in Green Bay when they came to Lambeau there. First impressions I think are very important when you see quarterbacks on the field because in-person evaluations, particularly at that position, have always carried more weight as far as how I felt about a player. So, I think he's gotten off to a great start. He's built a really good foundation. I'm told he's a tremendous leader.
“Defenses get you to the championship. The quarterbacks win championships. And I definitely think Dak is that quarterback.”
That’s a detailed, glowing review of his new quarterback. And not like there was much question anyway, but it clarifies what the Cowboys think of Prescott. That won’t exactly drive down the quarterback’s price.
Prescott still not signed
Prescott reportedly turned down $33 million per season during last season, then went out and threw for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns. He bet on himself and won.
The sheer numbers involved in the contract will make negotiations difficult, but McCarthy isn’t worrying about it.
"Really, Dak is in a business situation now obviously," McCarthy said. "I've gone through this as a head coach with a number of my players in the past. I think like anything, it's time to be patient and let the business people work out the business matter. … We'll just take it one day at a time."
Presumably Prescott will be back with the Cowboys, and then Dallas can work on finding its way back to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1995 season.
McCarthy thinks he has the right quarterback for that challenge.
