New Jersey Devils trade captain Andy Greene to Islanders
The New York Islanders have made a pre-trade deadline move to add to their defensive core, acquiring defenseman Andy Greene from the New Jersey Devils. The Devils receive David Quenneville and the Islanders’ 2021 second round pick.
The 37-year-old Greene has played 14 seasons in the NHL all with the Devils, the last five of which he served as the team’s captain. In 923 career games, he has scored 49 goals and 246 points while playing more than 20 minutes per game for nearly all of his career.
Greene is in the final year of a five year extension, and he carries a cap hit of $5 million. His addition to the lineup brings balance to the Islanders’ defensive pairings as a third left-handed shot defenseman in the fold.
The 21-year-old Quenneville was a 7th round pick of the Islanders in 2016. In 32 games split between the AHL and ECHL this season he recorded one goal and eight points.
