New movies, TV shows to watch on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and more streaming sites in October

From Netflix to Disney+, Hayu and Paramount+, October's calendar of new movies and TV shows to watch is filled with the return of some of our previous favourites to stream, in addition to some interesting new content with our favourite Hollywood stars.

Notably, we get more Loki from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in October, and even the 1990s sitcom Frasier is coming back to try to make its mark in 2023.

A new docuseries on David Beckham is expected to be a hit, in addition to a documentary on Canadian entertainment icon Mr. Dressup, Ernie Coombs.

On the subject of Canadian TV, Murdoch Mysteries Season 17 will premiere in October.

For reality TV, a new show, House of Villains, already seems to have a lot of eager fans.

Disney+

Loki

Fan-favourite Marvel series Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston, is back for Season 2 on Oct. 5.

"Loki Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority," the official synopsis reads. "Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose."

With Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Sophia Di Martino returning to the show, along with Tara Strong voicing Miss Minutes, Season 2 also marks the introduction of Ke Huy Quan to the cast.

Goosebumps

Based on R.L. Stine's bestselling books, the Goosebumps series premieres on Disney+ Oct. 13.

A group of five high schoolers set off to investigate a death of a teen that happened 30 years ago, but end up revealing their parents secrets.

Netflix

Beckham

Soccer phenomenon and pop culture icon David Beckham is the subject of a four-part docuseries being released on Netflix Oct. 4.

Directed by Academy Award-winner Fisher Stevens, BECKHAM goes all the way from the star's upbringing in east London, to his family with Victoria, and the "immense ups and downs" in Beckham's life.

Fair Play

Chloe Domont’s feature debut, Fair Play, is a thrilling, intense and enraging finance drama that lands on Netflix Oct. 6.

Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich's characters work at the same finance firm, but no one knows they're in a romantic relationship. When a promotion comes up at the firm, the power dynamics between these two shifts in this gripping look at destructive gender dynamics and the intersection with power.

Prime Video

Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe

A piece of our Canadian entertainment history will soon be shared around the world when the Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe documentary is released on Prime Video Oct. 10.

Mr. Dressup, Ernie Coombs, was responsible for Canada's favourite children's program for 29 years, with 4,000 episodes. The documentary looks at Coombs' professional and personal life, in addition to notable fans like Michael J. Fox, Eric McCormack, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Jonathan Torrens sharing how much Mr. Dressup still means to them.

The Burial

After its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the Amazon Original movie The Burial, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx, will be released on Prime Video Oct. 13.

Based on true events, 75-year-old funeral Jeremiah O’Keefe (Jones) hires Southern Baptist personal injury lawyer Willie E. Gary (Foxx) when his business is experiencing financial troubles. It's a fun story with a particularly captivating performance by Foxx.

Apple TV+

Lessons in Chemistry

Academy Award-winner Brie Larson plays Elizabeth Zott in Lessons in Chemistry, based on the novel by Bonnie Garmus, premiering Oct. 13 on Apple TV+.

Set in the 1950s, Elizabeth's dream is to be a scientist, but when she gets fired from her lab she takes a job as a host of a cooking show on TV, using it as an outlet to publicly battle the patriarchal society she lives in.

The Pigeon Tunnel

The late David Cornwell, better known as the famed author John le Carré, was notorious for doing very few interviews, but Academy Award-winning documentarian Errol Morris was given the privilege of developing a documentary on his life, before his death in 2020.

Being released on Oct. 20 on Apple TV+, The Pigeon Tunnel is a fascinating, riveting and quite candid look at the famed author's life.

Crave

Bria Mack Gets A Life

From showrunner Sasha Leigh Henry, Bria Mack Gets A Life is set to be one of Canada's best comedy shows.

Premiering on Crave Oct. 13, Bria McFarlane (Malaika Hennie- Hamadi) is a recent university graduate who moves back to the suburbs with her mom, but then her mom reveals her plans to retire.

The Gilded Age

Season 2 of the The Gilded Age, from creator of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, premieres on Oct. 29.

The season begins on Easter morning 1883, with Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) spending the season challenging the "old system" of Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy), after Bertha's bid for a box at the Academy of Music was rejected.

Paramount+

Frasier

Kelsey Grammer returns to the role of Frasier Crane in a new, 10-episode season of Frasier, on Paramount+ Oct. 12 (in the U.S. and Canada).

Frasier is in Boston for "the next chapter of his life," with Jack Cutmore-Scott playing Frasier’s son Freddy.

Will a reinvented, newer version of Frasier actually work? With most of the original cast not returning, it seems like the show is starting on shaky ground, but we'll see how it turns out.

Fellow Travelers

Based on the Thomas Mallon novel, Fellow Travelers is part love story and part political thriller, starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey.

Being released on Paramount+ Oct. 27, the series follows the romance of two men who meet in McCarthy-era Washington, as Fellow Travelers follow its characters from the Vietnam War protests in the '60s, "drug-fueled disco hedonism" in the '70s and the AIDS crisis of the '80s.

Hayu

House of Villains

The new E! show, House of Villains has put some of the most hated reality TV stars together, and we can't wait to see it.

Hosted by Joel McHale, each villain has to manipulate their castmates to win $200,000, but each of these contestants have proved that they're really master manipulators.

The 10-person cast includes Johnny Bananas from MTV's The Real World and The Challenge, Jonny Fairplay from Survivor, Omarosa Manigault Newman from The Apprentice, Jax Taylor from Vanderpump Rules, and Tiffany"New York" Pollard from Flavor of Love.

House of Villain will be available to stream on Hayu in Canada on Oct. 13.

Winter House

Winter House Season 3 looks to be a particularly interesting season, with the trailer teasing a pregnancy test and some Below Deck castmembers with some big personalities.

Additionally, Tom Schwartz from Vanderpump Rules seems to have a possible hook up with Katie Flood from Below Deck.

It already seems like the type of reality TV drama we love to watch.

Winter House Season 3 will be available to stream on Hayu Oct. 24.

CBC Gem & FuboTV

Murdoch Mysteries

The famed Canadian drama Murdoch Mysteries, starring Yannick Bisson as William Murdoch, is back for Season 17, an impressive feat for the TV show.

CBC Gem: $4.99/month for premium

With Murdoch and Ogden (Helene Joy) abducted, Crabtree’s (Jonny Harris) first task as Inspector is to find them.

The series is available to stream on Oct. 2 on CBC Gem, it will also be available to watch on FuboTV.

Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty is back with Season 7, teased as being a continuation of the Rick vs. Prime Rick saga.

The Adult Swim series will be available to watch on FuboTV on Oct. 15.

The new season comes after co-creator Justin Roiland was fired earlier this year, following abuse allegations.
