New Trump communications chief Scaramucci apologizes ‘for the 50th time’ for past insults

The White House’s newly appointed communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, apologized Friday for his past statements about President Trump. Scaramucci even repeatedly proclaimed, “I love the president” during a surprise White House press briefing in his new role.

“One of the biggest mistakes that I made because I was an inexperienced person in the world of politics,” Scaramucci said when asked about his criticism of Trump during the campaign.

“I was supporting another candidate. I should have never said that about him,” he continued. “So president, if you’re listening, I personally apologize for the 50th time for saying that. But here’s the wonderful thing about the news media: that was three minutes of my life; he’s never forgotten it, you’ve never forgotten it — but I hope that someday, Mr. President, you will forget it.”

Before becoming a vocal Trump supporter, Scaramucci called the celebrity real estate mogul a “hack politician.”

“It’s anti-American and it’s very very divisive,” Scaramucci said of Trump’s campaign rhetoric. “I’ll tell you who he’s going to be president of — you can tell Donald I said this: the Queens County bully’s association.”

He also said he and Trump had a hard time communicating with one another.

“When I talk to Donald and he talks to me, we — I don’t know — I guess we don’t understand each other,” Scaramucci said in a 2015 appearance on Fox Business. “I may need to get an interpreter in the room to talk to Donald together, you know what I’m saying?”

He was speaking at the time as a loyalist to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who was running against Trump for the Republican presidential nomination. After Walker pulled the plug on his campaign, Scaramucci switched teams, moving to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s.

Scaramucci said Friday that Trump hasn’t forgotten those jabs, either.

“He brings it up every 15 seconds,” he said at the White House briefing.

In the past, Scaramucci has publicly embraced positions on issues that were clearly at odds with those of Trump, who has dismissed climate change as a “hoax” and opposed additional gun restrictions.

Scaramucci’s appointment caused rifts throughout the Trump administration, with White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, adviser Steve Bannon and press secretary Sean Spicer all reportedly upset about the appointment. Spicer resigned as Scaramucci’s appointment was reported.
