Newark Airport has the most flight cancellations in the country, study says

Travelers flying out of Newark are more likely to see their flight canceled than in any other U.S. airport, according to new data released two weeks before the busiest travel day of the year.

The insurance agency InsureMyTrip, analyzing data from the Department of Transportation, found 3.78% of Newark flights have been canceled in 2023, the most of any airport in the country.

In more bad news for local residents looking for alternate travel options, New York City's two major airports finished second and third on the list. LaGuardia had 3.32% of flights canceled, followed by JFK at 2.91%, according to the data.

All three airports actually saw a decrease in the frequency of canceled fights compared to 2022. LaGuardia led the trio last year with 5.19% of cancellations, followed by Newark at 4.82% and JFK at 3.69%.

Still, the revelation that the top (or bottom) three airports for cancellations are all in one area will undoubtedly cause some worry for New Jerseyans traveling for Thanksgiving.

The Sunday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, is projected to be the year's busiest travel day, according to the digital media company Airline Geeks. Citing figures from the aviation analytics group Cirium, the site said United States airlines have scheduled more than 22,000 flights with 3 million total seats available on that day.

Airports are likely to see an increase from the post-Thanksgiving Sunday rush last year, when the TSA screened a record 2.56 million passengers, according to Airline Geeks.

Most airlines that cancel a flight try to rebook passengers on the next available plane, but InsureMyTrip notes that delay and cancellation policies can vary. Airlines are not required to reimburse travelers when their flight is canceled.
