Newark-area man killed crossing Otts Chapel Road after being hit by 2 vehicles Thursday

A 38-year-old Newark man died after being hit by two vehicles Thursday night near Newark, Delaware State Police said.

He has been identified as Brandon Buchanan.

The crash occurred about 10:10 p.m. as Buchanan began crossing the north lanes of Otts Chapel Road, past the Oklahoma State Drive entrance to the community of Academy Hill.

As he crossed the roadway, the man was hit by a 2007 Ford Taurus that was northbound on Otts Chapel Road. After that collision, police said, a 2016 Jeep Cherokee that was traveling behind the Taurus also struck the man.

Buchanan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both vehicles came to a stop near the collision scene. Neither driver, both of whom were 24-year-old men, was injured.

At the time of the crash, police said, the area was dark and not well-lit. The pedestrian also was wearing dark clothing and not carrying a flashlight or lighting device, according to police.
