NATALIE DUDDRIDGE: Cell phone video shows flames and smoke engulfing a home on Astor street in Pennsylvania Avenue at 5:00 this morning. Gaby Carvalho lives next door, and took this video after she woke up to the sounds of people yelling for help.
GABY CARVALHO: I listened. A man telling get out, get out, get out, get out. And the woman said, I can't, I can't. And I listened. Kids are screaming. And people screaming.
- We had no idea how it started. All we heard was people screaming.
NATALIE DUDDRIDGE: Police say the boy's parents and siblings escaped, but the seven-year-old was trapped on the third floor. His father tried to climb up to rescue him.
- He came up the back. So he tried to climb up the roof, and come from my window, to probably get his son from the top. But I guess he couldn't.
NATALIE DUDDRIDGE: By the time the firefighters found the child, it was too late.
JOSEPH MORRIS: When you lose somebody, it hurts real bad. I know the father is all messed up.
NATALIE DUDDRIDGE: Police say two adults and three other children were taken to University Hospital for treatment. A deli owner says the family had just moved into the neighborhood a few months ago.
ELSIDO FRIAS: I'm real sad we are hear that, because, you know, that family I know. He come in here like, five, six times every day.
NATALIE DUDDRIDGE: The fire also spread to these two adjoining homes. In total, three families were affected and have been moved to temporary housing. As for the cause, that's still under investigation. In Newark, New Jersey. Natalie Duddridge, CBS 2 News.
