Newburgh man pleads guilty to manslaughter in fatal shooting

GOSHEN - A Newburgh man pleaded guilty Friday to manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a fellow Newburgh resident last year.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said Lamont Williams, 29, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault, both felonies.

Williams was accused of fatally shooting Daquan Corbett, also 29 and from Newburgh. A 5-year-old boy who was in the area during the gunfire suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police and prosecutors alleged that Williams had a loaded pistol when he was walking in the area of Washington and Clark streets early on the evening of Sept. 29, 2022. He fired the weapon, fatally injuring Corbett and wounding the boy, they said.

Hoovler said after the shooting, Williams fled the jurisdiction. The Orange County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit, the United States Marshal Service and North Carolina law enforcement tracked Williams to a location in North Carolina, where he was taken into custody.

Williams was then extradited back to New York to be arraigned on a sealed indictment. Hoovler said at the plea proceedings, Williams admitted to killing Corbett and injuring the boy.

Hoovler said under the plea agreement announced Friday, Williams is expected to be sentenced to 25 years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision when he is sentenced on July 10.

"This outcome would not have been possible without the City of Newburgh Police Detective Division's dogged pursuit of Mr. Williams, generating leads that tracked him down the East Coast to a North Carolina closet, and finally returning him to justice," Newburgh Police Commissioner Jose A. Gomerez said in a statement released by Hoovler's office. "We are grateful for the many hours of work the district attorney's office expended to secure justice for Mr. Williams' victims."

Matthew Witherow, Williams' attorney, could not immediately be reached for comment.
