Newburgh man sentenced in 2022 shooting death of 29-year-old near Washington Street

GOSHEN - A Newburgh man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault earlier this year in the 2022 shooting death of another Newburgh man was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler announced the sentence for Lamont Williams, 29, of Newburgh Wednesday afternoon.

According to documents filed and statements made in Orange County Court, Williams was in possession of a loaded pistol when he was walking in the area of Washington and Clark streets in the city of Newburgh early in the evening on Sept. 29, 2022.

Williams fired the pistol and struck two people. One victim, Daquan Corbett, also 29 and from Newburgh, died as a result of his wounds.

Also struck by bullets was a 5-year-old boy who was in the area at the time of the shooting. His wounds were not life-threatening.

After the shooting, Williams fled the area and the jurisdiction.

The fugitive unit of the Orange County Sheriff's office, the United States Marshal Service and North Carolina law enforcement tracked Williams to a location in North Carolina, where he was taken into custody. He then was extradited back to New York, where he was arraigned on a sealed indictment.

At the plea proceeding in April, Williams admitted to killing Corbett and injuring the boy, Hoovler said. Williams pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault, both felonies.

"The significant sentence imposed today underscores the tragic consequences of this defendant's violent actions," Hoovler said in a statement released by his office.

Williams' attorney, Matthew Witherow, could not immediately be reached for comment.
