Newcastle and Burnley played out a goalless draw at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday.

It was Burnley who had the more promising moments early in the game, though the hosts grew into the match as the first half progressed.

Steve Bruce’s men, who had only one win in nine league games, created the first real opening on the half-hour mark when Miguel Almiron saw his low shot saved by Nick Pope.

Dwight Gayle then sent an acrobatic effort just wide midway through the second half and Matt Ritchie saw a shot fly just off target, but there was to be no breakthrough.

The result saw Burnley move to 38 points, with Premier League safety within their sights.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are on 32 points, seven clear of the relegation zone.

Eighteenth-placed Aston Villa play Manchester City in the Carabo Cup final on Sunday.
