Newcomerstown News: Art center's outdoor space has been updated
Arts Center of Newcomerstown has been called a hidden gem in Tuscarawas County, and included with this gem is another − the the center's door creative space. The space was recently updated and used for the 50th class reunion celebration of Newcomerstown High School’s class of 1973.
Officially dedicated to the memory of Robert C. Heifner, the outdoor space serves multiple purposes for the center. Michael Wise, the center's executive director, said the plan for an outdoor creative space took root when the arts center received many donations in the memory of Heifner after his passing in February 2019.
The space includes a relaxing atmosphere with free Wi-Fi and has been used for the center’s arts and crafts classes for students in grades K-12. It also serves as a venue for various ARTSNCT’s events.

Upcoming events
∎ As previously reported, the second annual River Poker Run is Saturday. The cost is $25. The village is partnering with Newcomerstown NOW on the event. Also family activities will be held at Simonds-Heller Park starting at 9 a.m. Activities include fishing derby, food trucks, live music, ax throwing and more. Follow the Newcomerstown NOW Facebook page for more details. The rain date is Aug. 19. ∎ A prayer walk will take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 13, with Christ Methodist Church. It will start at the high school with prayers for staff, students and families. Those unable to walk can drive.

∎ Last day of operation for the Cy Young Pool is Friday.∎ The next council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 21, at the Village Administration Building.
School news
∎ Freshmen orientation is 5:30 p.m. Aug. 16, with a school open house at 6:30 p.m.∎ High school will resume classes at 8 a.m. Aug. 17.∎ Sixth grade and new student orientation is 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16, at the middle school. The first day of school is August 17. ∎ The open house at East Elementary is 5:30 p.m. Aug. 14.∎ On Aug. 15 a kindergarten parent/guardian only meeting will be held at 5 p.m. First day of school for students with last names starting with A through L is Aug. 17. All other students will begin Aug. 18.∎ The West school open house is 5 p.m. Aug. 14 for students in second through fifth grade. The first day of school is Aug. 17. The preschool open house is at 9 to 11 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 24. Class assignments will be given at that time.
