Newcomerstown News: Highlights from the last council meeting of the year

The Village of Newcomerstown Fire Department has responded to 99 runs in its eight months as a volunteer team.  They recently worked with Med Flight for training in assisting with the landing of helicopters, identifying hazards in the flight path of the approaching aircraft and training with rescue tools.

The Attorney General’s office is still occupying the Newcomerstown Fire Station and oversees and controls the assets of the former Newcomerstown Emergency Rescue Squad, but has given Fire Chief Jeff Parks permission to begin starting the vehicles each month. With this check, one ambulance, the ladder truck and brush truck were unable to be started due to expired batteries.

In other business, council approved:● A lot split at 218 Main St, the former location of the Watt’s True Value. The building is now owned by Mariah Watson.

● A grant assistance program in the amount of $3,000 for ARTSNCT to create a downtown historic mural in the summer.

● An ordinance setting the pay for village employees in 2024.

● The purchase of body cameras for the Village Police Department from LensLock at a cost of $23,970.

● Newcomerstown resident Dave Hickman as a member of the Zoning Board for a term of five years.

Cadle closed the meeting by recapping the many grants the village has applied for and what they will mean for Newcomerstown and projects planned for the next five years.

The first meeting in January will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, as Monday is a holiday. The meetings are held at the village administration offices located at 308 S. College Street.

Open council seat Mayor Cadle announced via the Newcomerstown Mayor’s Facebook Page Dec. 14, there is an open council seat for the term beginning Jan. 1. Those interested should send a resume and letter of interest to the mayor’s office at 308 S. College Steet, Newcomerstown, Ohio 43832. The deadline to apply is Friday. Council and mayor will make a decision prior to the next meeting.
