Newcomerstown in the News: Love Tusc receives pledges

NEWCOMERSTOWN − The Thomas R. Little Foundation and Village Council each have pledged $2,000 to the “Love Tusc: Tuscarawas County Sculpture Tour” installation in Newcomerstown.

Twenty communities in Tuscarawas County are to get sculptures, with the Newcomerstown installation to be painted by village resident Carole Ann Hunt.

Tuscarawas Arts Partnership has undertaken the project, with Wilma Mullett as executive director. Mayor Pat Cadle and Michael Wise, director of ARTSNCT, are local community coordinators.

According to a grant application, the Love Tusc project is to “take a cohesive design of a sculptural piece to place in multiple locations and communities across Tuscarawas County."

Each of the sculptures will receive a unique design that reflects its community.

"The goal of the project is to create a sense of connectivity among communities … as part of collaborative project that residents and visitors can experience while accomplishing goals of celebrating cultural identity, economic development, cultural tourism and arts access and opportunities,” according to the grant application.

TAP is planning on the sculptures being completed in time for a scavenger hunt between May 26 and Sept. 4. The hunt is expected to be more than 100 miles long, with those completing the tour entered into a drawing for a prize.

The sculpture is depicted as an outline of Tuscarawas County with a cutout of a heart at the center. It is 47 inches high and 35 inches across.

The total cost for all 20 sculptures is $169,000, with the Newcomerstown portion set at $6,950. With the donations from the village and the Thomas R. Little Foundation, there remains less than $900 to complete the local funding.
