NEWCOMERSTOWN − Eric Gagne, a Cy Young Award winner in 2003, will be the parade marshal for the 2023 Cy Young Days Festival, June 23-25.

Gagne played 10 seasons in Major League Baseball (1999-2008), primarily with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he spent eight years. He was named to the National League All-Star Team three times (2002-2004).

Gagne’s breakout season came in 2003 when he converted 107 saves out of a possible 111 opportunities, which was the fastest to ever get to 100 saves in a career. As a result, he was named the NL Cy Young for the 2003 season, the second Canadian-born pitcher to win the prestigious award, with the first being Ferguson Jenkins.

Between Aug. 26, 2002 and July 5, 2004 for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Gagne was able to convert a record 84 consecutive save chances, striking out 55% of the batters he retired during the 2003 season.

Easter Experience

Officials of The Home Plate Project, a faith-based nonprofit group, are getting ready for Easter Experience 2023.

Daniel and Krisen Bias of The Home Plate Project said this year’s event will be 10 a.m. March 25 at Lee Stadium at Newcomerstown High School.

The free event will include chances to win bicycles, gift baskets and other prizes. There will be over 20,000 eggs for children to find, plus other games. A Chick-fil-A food truck from Strongsville will also be on site.

“However, we need you,” Daniel Bias said. “We were so blessed and humbled last year because of the generosity of our supporters. Last year, we had such a huge turnout, even in a blistering cold rain. That happened because of your support.

“This year we are hopeful to have that help again. There is something special when you ride down the street only to see a student riding the bike you picked out for them. This is our chance to not just give them a bike, but to bless them. To show them that we care, and behind us is a God that loves us. He sees us even when we don’t have hope. This year we are excited to have tens of thousands of eggs, but we are most excited to share the love of Christ.”

Village survey

A survey for village residents will be included in an upcoming water bill, with officials wanting input about how the village is doing and what needs to be done in the coming years.

Questions include:

  • On a scale of 1 to 5, how do you believe the village is progressing? Why do you feel this way?

  • Rank the following concerns from most to least: Illegal drug sales and drug-related issues; rundown properties; lack of employment opportunities; too few retail businesses; other (describe). Any suggested solutions?

  • Housing. The survey asks for suggestions on how to increase available housing.

  • What types of businesses are needed in the village?

  • What changes would you suggest for any village services (water, wastewater, street, police, administration)?

Surveys should be returned to the Municipal Building on College Street.
