Newcomerstown News: Second of six Lenape statues coming to village this fall

The Newcomerstown Historical Society announced the next Lenape statue will arrive late September or early October. This would be the second in the collection of six. Chief Netawatawees was the first one sculpted by Alan Cottrill, a nationally-known bronze sculptor in Zanesville. He is in the final stages of completing Bemino, known as John Killbuck Sr. to white settlers. He was a medicine man and war leader of the Lenape.

The statues are an important part of Newcomertown’s history and are made possible through donations. Those wishing contribute can send checks to the Newcomerstown Historical Society with account 8454 written on the check note line and mail it to Park National Bank, 220 East State St., Newcomerstown, Ohio 43832.The historical society will hold a murder mystery in October and has named William Casteel as historian for the Newcomerstown Historical Society.

Notes from village council∎ Marianne Harding was recognized for paying the fee for seven people to attend firefighter training. The cost for each person was $2,300.∎ The Oxford Township Trustees made a $38,000 donation for the village fire department to purchase turnout gear for firefighters. Council approved fire contracts for Oxford and Washington Townships.∎ John McMullen, Chris Gardner, and Haley Lazette were hired as firefighters.∎ Emily Campbell was hired as a part-time dispatcher at the police station and Bryan Grewell was promoted to dispatcher II status.∎ Council approved the purchase of six buildings as part of the Brode/Berkshire property adjacent to the street department for $110,000. The buildings are all in great shape regarding structure and roofs. Once the village receives the deed, the council will discuss how best to utilize each building.∎ A training class for five new firefighters will be held at the village hall. This will bring the total to 20 firefighters.∎ A discussion was held on the Shade Tree Ordinance, resignations were accepted from employees of the police department, and council also approved a contract with the Senior Citizens Center. Work continues at Simond’s-Heller Park with trails, maps and more.The next council meeting is 7 p.m. Aug. 21, at village hall.Ohio Means JobsThe Ohio Means Jobs of Stark and Tuscarawas counties will be at the Newcomerstown Public Library from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 24, Sept. 9, Oct. 26 and Nov. 30 to help residents with resume writing, interviewing skills, job search assistance, and funding for training.
