Newfound Gap Road through Smokies reopens Wednesday morning. Snow and ice possible on road

U.S. Highway 441/Newfound Gap Road from Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to Cherokee, North Carolina reopened to traffic the morning of March 15. Drivers should be cautious of ice and snow while passing through.

The major road through the Smokies reopened Wednesday morning after closing Tuesday evening due to winter weather, a tweet from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Road Info account previously stated.

Unseasonably cold weather dropped temperatures to the low 20s Tuesday evening. A freeze warning is in effect for East Tennessee from 9 p.m. March 14 until 11 a.m. March 15, according to the National Weather Service.

A slight warmup is expected on Thursday before another cold front moves through the region, the NWS stated. A chance for rain also increases late Thursday night and Friday morning.
